    Review of Detail Fest 2014

+1 for Yancy being awesome. Anyone ever realize how much Yancy does for PBMG/Autogeek? We definitely wouldn't have had such a fantastic live feed of all the classes, plus them being uploaded to YouTube within hours of them airing. Not to take away from anyone else at AG but, can't imagine AG...

    washing cars at a dealership

I would't give my job to work at just any dealership. You really have to do your research on which dealerships are worth working for and will actually teach you more than what you can learn on your own and online. I would keep working the job you have and start doing the vehicles of family...

    drill for polish: why not?

The Meg's power DA system might be good and all but, I don't think anyone would rather use it over an actual DA polisher. It takes long enough to polish a vehicle, let alone if you were to only use a 4 inch pad on a drill attachment. I'd pass on that. You'll end up spending as much, if not more...

Need something more aggressive for buffing but what?

What year is the Mercedes you have scheduled? I would do a couple test spots and see if you can just follow compounding/MF disc with Wolfgang FG3.0 on a polishing pad. Then go straight to Collinite. You also need to take into account if any paint on the MB is not original.

Need something more aggressive for buffing but what?

You said you did no less than six passes per half panel. I hope that's not what you meant. How big a section are you working? You need to shrink the working area down to no bigger than about three times the size of the pad you are using. So a six inch pad would mean no bigger than an 18" square...

    Coweb Swirls or Tick Marks?

So you plan on polishing the whole car with only four inch pads? Are you reducing speed and or pressure when using 205/yellow pad? I would try spritzing some water or QD on the cutting pad to extend the buffing cycle of 105. Well, that is assuming that the paint even needs 105. Did you do a test...

1st Use of Griots Garage DA Polisher

Good results for 6-7 hours on a 16 yo truck. Did you dry the truck before spraying Iron-X on it? Otherwise it would be dilluted and also may run off the panel. Did the 10:1 APC leave any residue? I would think it would at least need to be followed by a damp(from water only) MF to remove the...

    Have I removed enough contaminents?

That thing is one step from a repaint. The last pick is CC failure and the scratches look like the beginning of CC crazing. Either way the etchings may be too deep to completely remove. IMO that paint job may only be worth do a one step and or a cleaner wax/sealant. If you do attempt to...

    Hardened gorilla glue

I second, or third, contacting the manufacturer to find out what they recommend before trying anything. Let your client know also that 3M has an adhesive designed specifically for emblems and trim. They sell it at a bunch of places like parts stores, and I think Walmart.

    Insurance

I used ALFA but, they may only service Virginia. My policy was less than $550/year. Also look at what your deductibles will be.

    drill for polish: why not?

There are some guys that offer "scratch removal" to the used car lots around here, and they use a drill. A red MB they did had sever cookie cutter marks on the trunk that looked just horrible and probably would have required sanding to properly correct. I dont thnk they know how to use a rotary...

    Business logo tips

Working with a graphic designer will make a big difference in the finished product and how it comes across to the public and the audience you are trying to reach. You could offer a free detail to the designer if you are happy with the design. In my opinion a logo isn't what makes or breaks a...

Official 2014 Detail Fest LIVE feed conversation thread

That is awesome Yancy! Thanks a ton. I was really trying to catch Renny's last presentation but, couldn't get back to the computer in time. Will be checking them all out again ASAP. Did anyone have any discussion on the forum about Renny's last presentation?

    How long should it take?

Remember, Mike has been doing this over 30 years and is a machine at paint correction. It would be like watching a world class Marathon runner go out doing sub 5 minute miles and you expecting to do close to the same time because you bought the same shoes he wore, and watched some video on how...

    Blackfire Polish question

Well welcome to AutoGeek. You kinda did the intro thing backwards but, well do the best we can now that you've already got an order on the way.:) I did a black 2011 Tundra about for months ago and it was an experience, to say the least. This clear is on the softer side IMO and can be a pain to...

    Ultimate Compound Cut

Just get a bottle of UC and M105 and if you need more cut add a drop or two of 105 to the pad along with UC. Or you can mix a couple ounces of each in another bottle and adjust as needed. I actually mixed some D300, UC, and M105, and the cut and buffing cycle were amazing. :)

SONAX Perfect Finish on DA (3401) - Read the label with me, please.

I haven't used this product but, from the instructions you stated it sounds like they are giving instructions for a rotary. Tilting a DA isn't usually going to give you optimal cutting power since PC like DAs work best when kept flat. Even the 3401 is easier to manage when kept flat against the...
