    Microfiber Color vs. Softness

You actually asked if color has any impact on softness. My experience is no, on both fluffy and regular-nap towels in colors including white yellow, blue and black. Where color helps is avoiding cross-contamination. Black for wheels, white for glass, blue for interior, yellow for buffing off...

Hate dropping your MF towels? I DO!

On some towels (and some types of debris), I find it easier to pick stuff out when wet (like between wash and rinse cycle). The wet-dry approach has worked wonders on my good Poorboys DMTs when bad luck strikes.

    Exhausted!

First, consider raising your prices. Really, if your phone is ringing off the hook the demand is there. Is it ringing because you're the cheapest, only one in town, or best quality/reputation? Any answer, you can raise your prices a bit. You'll make the same or more, and have time for family as...

Blank Carbonless Paper – Make your own Client Forms

Major Thanks, Greg. I've been hand-writing 2 copies, but hate the time-wasting. Just bookmarked their link for use tomorrow. Super idea!

Hiring help, good and bad experiences

Hired a personal recommendation from a friend. Worked out well as an 'on call' person for my weekend business. Did notice that as weeks went on the initial diligence/novelty began to fade a bit but that's where my supervision and maintenance of standards needed to step up. Biggest reason I...

    Input on dealing with cancellations

After getting burned the first time, I always call to confirm, and since I don't take cards (yet), I don't have the ability to charge them. Probably wouldn't anyway for all the reasons above. If I can't reach you to confirm, then I try to schedule someone else, like the person I had to book 2-3...

Question about, uh, interiors and smells?

No carpet cleaner, no problem. Spray your cleaner liberally, brush in with a scrub brush, suck out with your wet vac. Lots of people clean carpets with this method while they are saving up for the Mytee or Aztec.

    Chamber of Commerce - Yes/No?

Look at it as a way to network and find new customers. It might lead to a few jobs among the members. Same as if you join the Masons, Elks, Lions or any other club. Your ordinary person on the street won't care if you're a member or not.

    Handling the accidental lowball quote?

Although I try to avoid it, most everyone around here wants a ballpark over the phone which I almost always follow-up with a visit to finalize thanks to AG. Appreciate all the good ideas on handling the phone and, if needed, moving beyond a quote later during the inspection, possible upsell...

Glass towel or stick with news paper?

Leave the newspapers for your puppy. Definitely try a glass towel. My glass towel is a very fine, flat weave MF. Works beautifully. I don't have this specific Cobra towel, but the Cobra towels I do have work great.

    Handling the accidental lowball quote?

One of many calls this sunny day, a client asked about the price to do a 1 step/very light swirl removal on their small Toyota. Learning from several posts here, I considered worst-case time estimate, my desired hourly rate and quoted a range of $250-$300 to be finalized when I look at the...

    What's the worst/funniest detailing mistake you've made?

My biggest mistake was agreeing to touch up some small dings on a white 90s Buick as part of a full detail. And I knew it wouldn't look right unless I gently feathered the edges of the spots before using the rattle can. I learned about the defective primer GM used on tons of 90s cars, watching...

    Extractor

I'd spring for the pro heat. Stronger motor/better extraction (surprised) versus the larger model. And while I suspect the 25 degree rise in temp is wildly optomistic, heat in general is better. Spinning brushes are kind of a gimmic, IMO. Too many nooks and crannies in a car interior for good...

    Hot water extractors

I don't think the Mytee tempo has heat, but that's a darn good price. And if you have hot water around (home or shop), it will run circles around the Bissell. I argued with myself for over a year before buying the Mytee II, about $700. It has heat built in, but the temperature rise is...

:iagree: When you're not using it as a platform, makes a great portable table for us mobile guys. Occasionally on sale too, and also available at Lowes if that's all you have nearby.

    Odd question about Nu Finish

:iagree: The chemical cleaners and polishes help remove the oils and dirt. Plus it adds that new car smell which confuses the wildlife.

Very nice...and if a 69 year old can do this, there is hope for my much younger neighbors.

    Detailing Vehicle / Personal Vehicle

Out of left field...how about a Toyota Rav4? Gas mileage in the mid 20s, carries about 1,000 lbs according to the manufacturer, bulletproof reliability. At 8 lbs per gallon, 60 gal is less than 500 lbs. Not as limiting as one might think.

    Coupons / Ads / Specials

To actually make a good looking coupon, you can do a surprising amount with Word or another word processor. Alternately, I use a FREE and very capable desktop publishing program called Serif Page Plus to do a lot of different publications. Google it. (and if you use photos or graphics from the...
