How NOT to make money detailing

The best part is his last line....you gotta wash the vehicle yourself!! So I'm paying him $60 to wipe on some wax and spray Fantastic around the cabin? That's, well......Fantastic.

    Best Carpet Extractor

I did several google searches and found lots of different commercial brands. Duramid is one. You might search locally for a janitorial service co that can offer advice as well as repair when needed. Why do you feel you need more suction/psi? Not drying can be fixed with a $50 blower, additional...

    Mileage Rates?

Make certain your price list includes the term "and up*" I also review the price in person with the customer before starting, and have them initial the work order. Then no confusion about 'tax included / plus tax' or other issues.

    New extractor really worth it?

Yes, you can buy the crevice tool and upholstery wand. IIRC they are about $100 each at most places. After obsessing for many months, I bought a Mytee II last month, and it makes life SO much easier. No regrets. I also paid just $760 delivered, brand new after mad Google searching all over the...

    starting to see..

You might have some grit in your MFs. Check those carefully, I find doing so wet right out of the washer it's easier to find and pick stuff out. Maybe too, the dealer used a strong filler wax to prep and it now wearing off. Third possibility: No matter how carefully you take care of your...

What kind of sprayers are you using with a rinseless wash?

For waterless washes like UWW, I use a high volume 2 pint spray bottle like the Kwazar. Something that I can hold in one hand, MF in the other and go. For rinseless, I don't think most use a bottle, unless you are pre-treating, then whatever works.

came across this when researching for a research paper

Not bad, Ryan. I actually agree with most of them, and fresh off today's success would almost like to take him up on the interior/smell one. I think there are a few on this forum that could change his mind.

As I recall they did pretty well with specials during Detail Fest. Hoping the memory isn't going. . .

What's a good interior UV protectant?

Poorboys World Natural Look is also a great product with UV protection. Nice coconut/vanilla scent to that customers love.

    Alternative extractor??

There is a new Bissell "lift off" machine that combines a removable portable unit with more horsepower than the LGM, with an upright body that you can sell to the wife or GF as a 'dual purpose' unit for home as well. I was looking hard at that one...

    footwear for detailing?

See my comments in the Oakley thread. There are "water shoes", a.k.a. water friendly tennis shoes that drain and dry quickly everywhere from Wal Mart on up. To your second question Poorboys World microfibers, especially DMTs.

    Oakley Car Washing Shoes?

Search "water shoes" and you'll find dozens of choices from Wally World to your favorite highly promoted brand. The water shoes are a nice idea because they typically don't have lots of padding or fabrics that hold water. In my case, the thick socks I have to wear this time of year kind of...

    Beginner buying an orbital

I bought a Griots and have been very happy with the power. As Glen and Ryan said, with the new MF systems and different compounds you can do great work with any of them. I'd look more closely at the pad and chemical choices between the kits. 5" pads is a good recommendation, or you could go for...

    Digital Camera

I have 2 basic point-shooters that I use to take before-afters and document scratches, dings and damage before I start. I looked for simple, rugged, easy to use. Bounces back when I drop it with slippery hands. Almost any Cannon would fit this profile. Let water resistant, or perhaps another...

    Autogeek Visors up for grabs!!!

There's the old saying "once you go black...." but my detail rig is red. I will happily accept either and wear it proudly (at least once it stops raining here in Portland)

Suggestion for removing cigarette smoke smell.

Check Home Depot. In the cleaners area there's a product in a milky white bottle jug, green printing that promises to 'ban your Odos; Pour a few ounces in your APC bottle, then spray everything and wipe/clean. Don't forget to lightly spray the headliner and wipe with a towel to get out the...

    Help with getting 'legit'

Google "Starting a business" + your state. Ditto "small business taxes" or look for your Department of Revenue. In my case, I'm paying several business taxes that add up to about 10% of gross revenues to the state. As a sole proprietor, detailing income gets added to full time job which may...
