if you talk to a shop that sells the vinyl for doing signs they have a citrus based cleaner for removing the old glue. i have used it after removing old signs on trucks and it worked good and smelled not to bad.

I just did my vw rims that where clear coated. They where scratched up real good so i had to remove the clear coat if you look under my name in the gallery and in the sanding and buffing section under fixing rims you can see the process i used and the list of products.

i had a chevy signal light like that.i took the bulb out and used a dry bottle brush to loosen the white powder on the inside then blew it out with air. it actually turned out good all the haze was gone.

i just did a set of rims that were painted and all scratched up now there a polished aluminum they turned out good i used the wolf gang kit. if you want to see photos of them i did a how to fix scratched rims in the wet sanding and buffing section.

about 6 hours.

before this is the pics in order of process. 120 grit dry. 500 grit wet 1500 grit wet 3000 grit wet this one has all the grits in order counter clockwise. aluminum_compound put on with wore out 1500 grit disk fine_aluminum_polish put on with wore out 3000 grit disk...
