While using cutting compound and a cutting pad trying to remove a scratch, I believe I may have scorched the clear. The attached pic has been resized, the affected area is roughly the size of a nickel. Any chance of repairing this without paint work?

I just bought a new white car and really want to protect the front bumper and hood from rock chips. What product would you recommend? I really don't want to pay 1000 to have this done. Is there anything else I can use?
