    "housewarming" gift

Thanks. I'll toss in an order of Stoner and probably A small bottle of conventional wash. Probably, I shouldn't just assume they will do a "Garry Dean method" rinseless just because I do. After all, a conventional rinseless is considerably faster I have to admit.

    "housewarming" gift

Sister bought a new car. She (well, really, brother in law) took very good mechanical care of the last one, but neglected the cosmetics. I want to get her a basic "kit" as a gift. (don't worry, she won't be insulted by the implications). No way, shape or how are sister or brother in law...

    Nanoskin bonnets and the pros

I've pretty carefully maintained the car since new. Actual benefit from claying is kind of marginal to begin with. Why run extra risk of messing it up if I don't have to? I have the little sponge which worked OK. No better or worse than clay. I'll just stick with that.

    Nanoskin bonnets and the pros

OK then. Its probably not worth it to me as I want to avoid even minor polishes if I can.

Duragloss Aquawax is the real deal!

Like it a lot. I can't say its the best thing out there, but its certainly better than the otc waxes. I'm not tempted to try other candidates as they are all much more expensive. It does have this peculiar trait of getting shinier a few hours after you apply it. I don't think its terribly...

    Nanoskin bonnets and the pros

OK you pro or semi pro detailers: Do you use a Nanoskin bonnet on your dual action polisher even on a black car, or do you do stick to clay? I have a car I have taken pretty good care of since new, a little over two years ago. I even have an expensive DA polisher. I admit that as little...

Thinking about trading in the CR-Z for a Fiat 500 Abarth, thoughts?

Exactly. Forget about the negative equity for a second. you pay for quite a lot, well, a fair amount, of depreciation the first couple of years, even on a Honda. Then you have the "transaction cost" The spread between selling wholesale and buying retail. The Honda will give you reliable...

First polisher for a weekend warrior

Reptitive threads here. Are you young enough to get full value out of the Flex before you are too old to polish your car? I'm perfectly serious. If you are more than 45 years old I'd get something else. Do you do enough to justify the cost? I'd say for the name brand machines, you should...

Anyone tried the Chicago Electric Platinum 6" DA from Harbor Freight

As a proud owner of a Flex Dual Action---Get the Harbor Freight. Sure the Flex is an incredible machine, but my car's paint is in excellent condition and with the high-powered sealants I learned about here, I only use it three times a year. I could get by with twice a year if I wanted to. I'd...

    Long time reader, first post

This place has actually saved me a lot of money. Even better, its saved me a lot of false starts. Better still, its saved me a lot of time. I wouldn't say my car looks like some of the showpieces I see here---I'm a "protect my investment" kind of guy more than an amateur detailer. My car...

    Collinite 845 Insulator Wax..my thoughts

I use the paste wax version, 476--paste waxes are easier to use with a dual-action machine. I put it on Veterans day and its still there. In fact, it hasn't budged. I'm at the point where I'm wondering how the heck I'll get this stuff off when I want it off. In the meantime, my expensive DA...

    Letting wax dry

I'm skeptical that it would really mess things up, if correctly removed. I certainly can see a scenario where someone gets frustrated and causes damage while trying to remove excessively hardened wax. I know Collinite 476 is adamant that it be removed panel by panel or else. I move pretty...

    Wax AND Sealant question...

Sealant first. But be aware that there is no clear demarcation between what constitutes a sealant and what constitutes a wax. A sealant is really just a wax that is synthesized. A wax is natural either carnauba or beeswax. Lots of products have some of each either sealant or wax, and its...

    Best once a year wax?

I liked it fine, but it wasn't as durable as Collinite. No way would I expect it to last a year.

Best wax for a white car?

That's weird. I've used both Collinite and Light Fantastic on my white, even though I don't experiment much. I didn't see much advantage to Light Fantastic. Collinite works just fine and of course is a lot more durable.

Duragloss #931 Rinseless Wash Mini Review

I use it on top of Collinite 476. Then I spray Aquawax on it anyway. How stupid is that? I'm not sure there is any additional benefit to spray waxing it. Maybe. It doesn't hurt the Collinite, but then, what does? The price is pretty good too, like most Duragloss products. One minor...

    Please be brutally honest...

Good advice, I think. Never economize on the number of towels you use. [I'm talking "Garry Dean" method where you slap one saturated towel after another on the surface]. I'm OK with the giant economy size bags you get from Sam's Club. Others insist on the plush ones. Don't skimp on the...

Guys talking Towels - Bulk or One Off - Good Bad or Ugly

I like the cheap ones you get at Sam's Club in the big plastic bag. Quantity beats quality. No doubt all these high dollar towels of which you speak are better, but not if you have to economize by buying fewer towels. Note: I do the "Garry Dean" wash method by which you use towel after...

Critique my first purchase...did I miss anything?

I'm with you. A plush towel with a good "hand" as they say in the rag trade is a luxury, no doubt, but not with respect to the car. The washcloth size things I got at Sam's Club work fine. Besides, the temptation to make a couple of extra swipes because your supply of towels is limited, is...
