I don't think those are water spots. Looks like ssome sort of chemical defect.

Due to the color on the MF towel I'm thinking you removed dirt/grime and now see the defect that was already there.

I am not as experienced as most here but for the newer car I think a light polish would do fine for that. I just detailed a new car for the first time also and used Klasse Super Gloss sealant and really like the results. The 2002 car would need a heavy compounding job and probably a polish after...

My wife had a 2010 Kia Forte Koup and now has a 2014 Kia Sorento. The paint is very soft and one of the few complaints I have about Kia's.
