Yes, post photos. A few rounds of a good iron remover applied and left to dwell should help breakdown embedded ferrous materials in the wheel finish (if that's what the issue really is). If the deposits are still there then perhaps a good wheel acid will be necessary as a last resort.

Not hard at all as long as you follow the instructions. You can find numerous youtube videos demonstrating how to apply. If your wheels have a lot of spokes and/or crevices on the face, then it can be a little tedious and annoying to get it applied on all the surfaces and wiped off.
