Considering having both doors replaced with a single door. I can only think of the advantages of the change but curious if anyone out there who has a single door 2 car garage can let me know if they have thought of what they don't like of it.

Thanks,
Howard

Are you replacing with a actual double size door or a car and half size door? Structurally sounds like a lot of work as far as cutting framing and installing a large LVL to carry extra weight load and other mods. Are you doing the work or contracting out?

Nothing not to like about a single door other than aesthetics. So much more room to maneuver a second or single vehicle into a garage with one door.

I have 1 door on a 2 car garage. I will tell you one thing though. Have them put the brace that runs across the top of the door on the inside on the bottom also. I had to replace my door because it would have a slight bow to it when it was up and if the wind would blow it would bounce. Eventually it cracked in the middle when my wife was putting it down to go to work. I got it covered under warranty but had to pay the labor. With that being said I'm sure the contractor put the thinness gauge door on my house. I like the way the door goes up and down now with top and bottom braced and when it is down and the wind blows it seems sturdier. JMHO.

Ive got a 3 car BUT the single bay is for Formula storage.

I have a 16' door for the other part of the garage and I am VERY glad I went with that instead of 3 8' doors because I can pull cars in at any angle and offset if need be without worry of hitting the jambs on the way back out. Nor do I have to worry about people pulling their cars in.

I have a 2 car 1 door as well. The only advantage I can see with 2+ doors is if the power goes out and you have to manually raise the door.

Now with that being said newer house are being equipped with backup generators and such, so the power theory is out the window.

I have the original door (15yrs old ez) and can't wait for that ol SOB to die so we can buy a quiet one.

Does anyone have one of those doors that roll up like shutters right above the opening? I heard their hit or miss, and your stuck if the power goes out, anyone would like to confirm this?

My thoughts also.......depending on how the house was built this could be very costly and I mean very costly!!!!

We have the roll up doors at work. If the power goes out you disconnect the door from the motor and open it manually with a chain.

Great!!!

Is it loud? I absolutely hate how loud mine is....

Thanks all for the help. I currently have a 2 car garage with 8' doors. Besides replacing the doors I need to have a center support pole in middle of the garage removed, very restricting.
