2 part coatings

I've purchased a few coatings to test side by side but have a question.
What's the point in laying the 2 if the base has a span of 3 up to 5, while the top has a definite 5 year perhaps more?

Here's a quote

How can the base make the top layer stronger? as the top layer if what will be exposed/abraided?

Only thing I can see the base doing is perhaps changing the look like how you sometimes top a sealant with a wax..

If the base is only good for 3 and top good for 5... Sounds like they both will fail at 3?
 
That question may be best answered by the manufacturer. Your question is logical though. Are you saying the base coat is recommended by the top coat manufacturer?

My understanding of durability claims is based on 2 things. First the bond it can take to whatever is below it (clean paint or?) and second the degradation of the film thickness over time. Your question seems related to the first point. And even if the top coat bonds perfectly with the product underneath it, that first layer, if bonded to the paint lasts less than the top coat will eventually give up both layers.

That's that my point/conclusions
Top coat will only last as long as base coat
And base will only last as long as it was formulated to do so...poor bond to paint surface will shorten that

The base and top coat of this certain manufacture Can be both uses as stand alone

I'd rather just do 2 coats of the Pro top coat vs 1 coat base one coat pro top coat..

It's like topping glosscoat with Gtechniq Serum light
Glosscoat base is 3yrs..Serum light top 5yrs= wasted effort to me
 
Maybe it's because being topped by a longer lasting product the life of the shorter term product is extended by virtue of the top coat? Since the top coat is the one being degraded over a longer time then the base coat time is extended to match. Like applying a base coat but leaving the car inside and never taking it out it hasn't been degraded. Just a thought.

But with this system the base offers nothing the Pro topcoat doesn't already do.. and it does it better then the base

So if all the combo may really do is add a different look while maybe per longing the base layer...may as well just do 2 pro top coats and it may have same effect of extending the base of not it's a definite 5 years..
 
All interesting points to ponder however i always defer to what the manufacturer recommends.
 
Maybe it's just marketing to get you to buy more products? :D

I do whats logical.. Sometimes manufactures dont have the best method or intentions.
They tend to do a balancing act while still attempting to maximize $$$

But oh well, I simply won't layer this unable to name product
But on curious how their pro topcoat will work together with Gtechniq CSL being the base

Hopefully in a week or 2 I'll have a suitable panel to test 5 coatings side by side

Their base coat did go on stupid easy being my first coating I've ever applied..less work then applilying 1st coat of PA Viking coat.

It seems to me that this particular type of
"2-part Coating system" is not a trailblazing
entity: it has already been (very gainfully)
parlayed by other Coating manufacturers.

Now if you can procure some of the product(s)
being discussed...

•Utilizing "test panels" would be the best
route to take in determining if applying:

-just the base alone;
-just the top-coat alone;
-both the base "topped" with the top-coat...

would actually meet your expectations, IMO.

The 2-pot concept is the old one, one pot is new!

Single component systems are inherently limited, which is why you don't find them as the core of industrial coatings. Multiple components offer much more flexibility with performance but they are less user friendly. My opinion is that it is a really specialised niche to offer for auto detailing and I'd be shocked to hear that anyone made their fortune from it!
 
Maybe the top coat won't stick properly to the paint, maybe it only sticks to the basecoat. So maybe the basecoat is different and adheres to the car better.

In a paint system we might refer to this as primer and paint.
 
I emailed him with my question about seeing no point in doing combo due to top coat lasting longer.he spit out the quote I mentioned in post 1 then mentioned i can just use pro top coat as stand alone

Yeah, ok. I don't know who "he" is because even from the thread on the other forum I can't really figure out what product you are talking about.
 
Are you talking about Pearl Nano? If so, the reasoning behind the 2 layer system is many. Separetly, the 2 different coats offer different abilities. The base coat isn't as hydrophobic as the top coat, and also not as glossy. I think its supposed to provide better (thicker) protection aka possibly more "solids" and better bonding agents for paint, where the top coat provides that super hydrophobic effect, and gloss. The top coat may also be better suited at bonding to the base coat than to bare paint.. creating that 3d matrix. I've used these products together on about 10+ cars and I really like it, although there is more work involved in application.
