The "horsepower wars" as many automotive journalists are calling it, is getting outright insane. 10 years ago your average person would be lucky to be able to afford a car with 350 horsepower, now you can walk in to your local Ford dealership and $32,000 later, have a daily driver with north of 400 horsepower and enough torque to wrinkle the pavement.

I'm still very partial to the 1998-2003 version of the M5 with its slick shifting 6-speed manual and rev-happy 390 horsepower naturally aspirated V8. Even to this day many automotive journalists and performance drivers alike refer to it as the ultimate "ultimate driving machine" from BMW.
