This is my first post after spending a lot of time around this site. Glad to see I'm not the only one completely obsessed with a perfect finish on my cars and boat.

I'm planning on getting a little more aggressive with my two year old Cobalt boat. I've taken great care of the finish but its starting to show some light swirling. Previously I've used collonite 920 boat cleaner followed by 885 fleetwax paste. I did all the work by hand and have been really happy with the results.

This year I'm planning on upping the ante a bit and picking up a PC 7424xp and also throwing a polish in between the cleaner and wax. I'd just like to remove the swirling and bring the shine back to new.

I could use some guidance on choosing a polish and pads for each step as I'm completely new to this. I've done some searching but have struggled to find much information about polishing a boat that has no oxidation and is in good condition.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome. Cobalt is a fantastic boat. The "Cadillac" of boats, literally. Gorgeous boats. Beautiful interiors and great durability of all of it. You got a Merc or Volvo? My dad had a few of them and themselves the jump to a Formula when he got above 30'. He still has a 202 here at home and his Formula is at their condo in the Lake of the Ozarks. I'm assuming you have the solid stripe in the gelcoat if you have swirling issues. We have always had good results with the Meguiars marine line of products. Definitely get the PC with the longer cord.

Absolutely love this boat. My wife complains I spend more time with it than her. The boat doesn't complain.

We have the Volvo 8.1 420hp. It's a MONSTER of an engine. You can hear it for miles with captains call on.

It does have a black stripe on lower hull and gunwale. That is where the swirling is most noticeable.

Ok so you have the Sport Stripe (I think that's what they call it). Yeah give the Meg's line a try. My dad has twin Merc 496 HO's in his Formula. That's the 8.1 for the Merc engines the old Chevy block. Total monsters. Get some pics of it up!

Is a product like their #45 marine polish enough to reduce the swirls or will I need something more aggressive?

Should work alright for you depending on pad selection.

Ok after more research I've decided on a plan.

As stated using PC 7424 for all steps.

1. Collonite 920 cleaner applied with Lake Country white polishing pads.

2. 3M finesse it II glaze with Lake Country white polishing pads.

3. Collonite paste fleetwax with Lake Country red ultra soft wax/sealant foam.

Does this look appropriate to those with experience? Any particular tips for each step?

Thanks!!
