Hi,

I ordered 'unigrit 3000 foam finishing discs' instead of the 6" (was not thinking).
Are these too small for a complete car (90' convertible mustang)?

Should I just purchase single of 3M Trizact 6 Inch 3000 Grit Performance Sanding Disc? If not, how many discs will I need?

Are all 3000grit 6" sanding discs made out of foam and not paper?

Thanks in advance.

Based on experience, I would start with the 1500 unigrit, then use the 3000. You will be there all day using the 3000 as a start-off, and will need more than one box. If you order the 1500, you may be able to do the whole vehicle, then use the 3000.

What are you trying to accomplish by sanding?

Orange Peel?

Deep Defects?

I forgot a lot of details. In short, the car was painted black about 11 months ago and not cutt/buffed. It's rather dull (orange peel). According to the painter it has 3 coats of clear (some type of PPG paint).

I have a dewalt 849 and a PC 7424xp. I have 3M 1500/2000 paper and plan to wetsand by hand then go with 3000 w/ DA.

I have ordered/received menzerna 400 & 4000

Why are you sanding with 1500 by hand?

There is a pretty good AMMO NYC video on you tube featuring Jason Rose and Kevin Brown. It is worth watching. Mike P also has great info on this Forum on wet/damp sanding

I have only worked on my own truck and the test panels down at Meguiar's, but I can't imagine sanding out an entire car by hand

I think you will need another box. What model are you sanding?
Never mind, I just saw the link. You maybe able to get by w/ just one box.

A 3000 disc should last quite a while

Mike Phillips will hopefully chime in

I've known people to completel sand down cars using nothing but 3" pads... just takes a lot longer.

In this thread I show the complete process, you can hit the pause button to stop the video to see what I'm holding up to the camera or what I'm doing.

Here are all the videos shot from when Yancy and I were in Lincoln, Nebraska for the 1969 AMX Wetsanding, cutting and buffing project called, "Helping in the Heartland".

Gets some popcorn and a cold drink as these are a lot of fun to watch as well as educational...

1969 AMX - Wetsanding How To Video - Part 1 - 30 Minutes

Part 1: Summary
Wes introduces the story behind the AMC AMX and then shares the story behind the LS1 engine going into it. Then I introduce Ben VanEperen, the painter who we refer to as Ben #1. Ben shares the process he used to paint the AMX. Next I introduce Ben #2 aka Wors on our forum. Then I introduce Paul aka Sailfish on our forum, Paul is a professional marine craft detailer. Next I introduce Bob Eilchelburg, the Presideint of Flex Tools North America.

After the introduction we do a "Test Spot" on the hood to dial-in and prove our sanding and buffing process to make sure it works and we're not going to run into any problems. This includes,

 • Hand sanding with #1000 3M Wet/Dry sandpaper - D.O.I. is explained after sanding with #1000
 • Hand sanding with #1500 3M Wet/Dry sandpaper
 • Machine sanding with 3M Trizact #3000 - This is called dampsanding.
 • Machine sanding with 3M Trizact #5000
 • Machine compound with Menzerna FG 400 with a Lake Country Wool Cutting Pad on a Flex PE14 Rotary Buffer
 • Machine polishing with the Flex 3401 with a Lake Country Hybrid Polising Pad and Menzerna SI 1500
 • Machine polishing with the Flex 3401 with a Lake Country Hybrid Finishing Pad with Menzerna SF 4000

After all of the above steps the crew inspects the results.

Nice work as is the norm for Yancy our videographer...

For 6" 3M Trizact I'd plan on one disc per panel. You might get more but it just depends on other factors.

The 3" is GREAT for sanding thin panel and getting close to edges and raised body lines.

Also get some 3M 1/4" Blue Vinyl Tape. A real life saver.

:)
