I am planning on using my rotary buffer and Lake Country Green pads with the 3D One Polish to do a one step paint correction on my friends car. Is there a risk of installing holograms on the paint with this method? Should I also purchase finishing pads? If so I was planning on purchasing two finishing pads of each diameter and 4 of the Green Lake country pads of each diameter backing plates that I have. Otherwise it will be 6 of the Green Lake country AIO pads. Any input I can get is much appreciated.

I have been polishing with a rotary for more years than I can count and still can't finish down hologram free. I have tried every technique, pad combo and polish known to man and still need to finish down with a DA.

Granted on some colors (white/silver) it may seem hologram free, but with the right light and angle its there.
This is a scratch pattern that a rotary leaves behind, no getting around it.

Mike P is an experienced detailer, but I believe he still finishes with a DA especially on dark colors.

Ok, Thanks I really appreciate the info!

YouTube In this video Mike shows us how to finish down with a rotary. I believe the key is in the amount of downward pressure you allow the machine to press down on the paint.

It takes some experience to finish hologram free with a rotary. I have been using a rotary for many years and I still use a DA on some paints to finish hologram free.

With DA machines being more powerful, compounds and polish technology and pad technology where it’s at today, I would suggest the DA route then as you get involved more, you can give the rotary a shot.

Jeweling paint with a rotary on a vertical panel is easier said than done.
Well, all I currently have is my rotary, which I'm still making payments on so i guess I'm going to have to figure it out, I also now plan to purchase the black finishing pads so maybe I'll just practice on a few junk cars first. I polished this hood the other day.

Also One thing I liked about the rotary was I didn't have to have multiple machines just change out the backing plates and get the correct size pads, as my budget wont currently allow me to purchase different sizes of DA polishers to fit various surface areas. I do plan to collect more machines I'm just not there yet. Also clients are currently few and far between, until I get my reputation up.

Rotary is a craft that is not learned over night. It took me countless hours to learn how to properly finish down with a rotary. I’m not saying you can’t do it. But I wouldn’t plan on watching some videos and picking up and thinking you can do it. There are many things on YouTube that look easy. But in reality are a lot harder than they. Stick with it and you will get it.

This is rather sad news.

I bought a mini rotary for small areas. My first car will be white.

However, my car is blue. Can you get a decent finish with a finishing pad and a fine polish on blue paint - i'm not chasing perfection. I can't finished out with the DA its too large....

What speeds do you use - RPM. I'm just starting to research on how to use it.

When you say mini rotary. What size pads are you using?

I have 1 inch to 3 inch pads. Foam/wool/microfiber.

My compounds/polishes are - sonax cutmax and perfect finish. 3D One, gyeon primer.

I was going to use a cutting polish with a medium pad and gyeon on a finishing pad.

I read about the Zenith Point method earlier.

Always do a test spot and use the least aggressive first.

Here's my take,

Even if you think you're not leaving behind holograms because you cannot see them... they are still there.

"touching" the paint with anything leaves a mark at the microscopic level.

I have no need to argue with anyone on this point as I've met a lot of guys that KNOW they can finish down hologram free.

I'm good with whatever they believe.

Me? I've done rotary-only details, here's one,

Bumblebee - Testing out the NEW DeWALT DWP849X

Rotary Buffer steps completed...

  • Compounding: 6.5" CS Orange Cutting Pad with Optimum Compound II at 1000 RPM
  • Polishing: 6.5" CS White Polishing Pads with Optimum Polish II at 1000 RPM
  • Jewelling: 6.5" CS Red Finishing Pads with Optimum Finish at 600 RPM

But in my heart of heart, I know there's a hologram scratches in the paint. So for me... I may start with rotary but now days I always finish out with an orbital.

The other HUGE factors when it comes to finishing down with a rotary only....

  • The PAINT - as in paint hardness or paint softness
  • The RPM
  • The downward pressure
  • The abrasive technology
  • The skill of the person
  • Heat
  • Time

The above are a boat load of factors and here's the deal - do the rough cut with a rotary and then simply avoid any regrets or hassles and finish down with ANY BRAND of orbital polisher.

Even a Porter Cable will ensure a hologram-free finish.

Thanks Mike, i actually have considered buying the gloss pads.

I have to say all this information is rather disappointing, probably would of skipped the mini rotary if i knew this. However, for tight spots is it even possible to use a small DA? With the throw..?

Like i stated before i'm not looking for perfection.

Maybe i will just use it for spot correction around my bumpers. Its the main reason i bought it.

I can't believe how much my views have changed since I wrote this.

Yes I am totally with you now.

I'd kind of forgotten about this. I'm glad I keep learning so much from this forum all of the time!

I think I have less ego now than I used too.

Actually The car I was talking about polishing up is coming next month, and yes I'll be using my free spinning DA!

Thanks Mike for your response and this definitely makes it clear for me.

From my limited use of a rotary I'd suggest using one mainly for cutting and using 5.5-6.5 inch pads. The larger 7-8 inch pads have more speed at the outer edge and are more likely to sling product. They also take up a larger area on small panels and tight areas.

If you have to use one for finishing, a waffle pad might be easier to work with than a flat pad.

Mike, that finish on that yellow is about as close to perfect as you can get.
