Is 3M's dedicated automotive tape any different from their regular blue painter's tape that you can purchase at any Home Depot/Lowes/Ace Hardware store?

I tried looking it up on 3M's site to do a little research but couldn't find it.
If it's truly better-suited for the job at hand then I'll go out of my way to get some, but if not: the blue stuff sure is more accessible and readily available.

Yes it is, alot less residue between the two.

But the question begs asking... How much residue have you noticed from standard blue painters tape?

Out of the handful or two times I've taped off a car for polishing I can't think of a single bit of tape residue left on the trim or paint, from reg. Blue or the Green Scotch 233+ (this is 3M's Auto Tape right?). Guess I haven't compared the two though, just use whichever is hanging on the closest halogen tripod's handle (a very convenient place).

OK, good info here.

Now the question is where to attain it locally? No offense to AG (becasue it's certainly not their fault) but I refuse to pay double what I have to due to shipping costs.

If I had a multiple-item order ready to go then throwing some tape into the cart would be a no-brainer, but I specifically and only need this right now. I guess I'll check with AutoZone, Pep Boys and Strauss.

Thanks.

I got the Scotch 233+ at Wesco, a paint shop supply store <---google this followed by your city, state.

:bat:

No offense taken! :p
I would say at an autobody store and/or a paint shop.

Walmart carries it in the auto section. If you go to Advanced Auto or Autozone, you may be surprised at the price they charge.

I've use the green 3M tape and at the moment of removing it doesn't leave any residure. just use it last weekend :xyxthumbs:

I was told that the green tape is a bit more flexible and therefor better if you want to bend around a curved area as opposed to cutting the tape and building around a curve. I did find that the green 3m tape as Asphalt Rocket said did leave a bit less residue. Now don't forget to dress those wheels LOL:laughing::laughing::laughing:

I have the 3M green automotive tape and have noticed a decent amount of tape residue but it's on a heavily swirled vehicle so I'm not sure if that comes into play or not (I wouldnt think)

Can I use any of these tapes? These are the only tape that I can find here in our place...

You can, but like Setec said....don't leave them on for more than a few hours

I will also suggest that these tapes are terrible for doing a 50/50 line

If you have 5 extra minutes; go to AutoZone and buy the good stuff (233+). It is more flexible, less residue, can be buffed over, faster to use

I really like the 3M precision tape. It's green also, but more pastel green than the 233. It's thinner and curves easier, works well for taping areas like sunroof weatherstrip. The thinness helps if you hit it with a spinning pad it doesn't want to roll up as much as other tape will on tight and curvy spots. Doesn't look like AG sells it though. They should. It's excellent.

Thank you allenk4...

What do you mean by 50/50 line? Sorry, noob here :D ...

I'm an expat here in Saudi. The AutoZone they have here is a car dealership and not car care supplies. How I wish its the same AutoZone you have there.

Again thanks, thanks, thanks....
