I use both, but, prefer the 5.5. I initially used 6.5 since that is the standard backing plate. I eventually got the 5 in BP and 5.5 in pads. Now I use my 6.5 in pads on my Flex 3401 and my rotary.Getting ready to buy supplies this month, what's better for the GG DA?? 5.5 or 6.5 in pads? It will be buffing my truck, parents excursion, sisters focus, and a toy hauler. Thanks

With that said, the Excursion and toy hauler are mighty large vehicles. Tough call on that. 6.5 will hold more product and cover more area, but, 5.5 will corrrect faster.
I think I would go with Megs MF DA system in 5.5 inch. The kit comes with a 5 in BP. You will get quick correction and nice finishing with that system. Some repaints are not as user friendly with it. Has the Excursion been repainted?

You might have to adjust your technique in those areas. Then again, you might not. I would be prepared to adjust it. The rest of the car should respond well to the MFDA system if that is what you choose. Even if you end up with foam pads, you might have to adjust technique on the repainted parts.Three spots.. Rear quarter panel(jacked knifed trailer) and they blended it with the rear door, so I count the whole rear door, and the hood was repainted. They had it since new so that's all that was painted.

My experience is with Megs pads, but, the same should apply.A point was brought up about the Opti MF pads for polishing, sorry to hi-jack the thread a tad but are the MF pads that much better for correction when using a good machine polish compared to foam pads for polishing? If so, why is this? Thanks guys!

Yes, they are faster and they typically finish better. THe microfibers increase surface area and get more product to the paint. Both of these increase the working ability of the pad and product. Not sure of the science behind finishing better, but, they do.
I did some spot wetsanding the other day. I used the 3 in MF pads and polish on my 3 in GG polisher (weak polisher). It was able to remove 1500 grit sanding marks with ease. That has traditionally thought to be a job for rotary polishers.
Well, they have a cutting and a polishing. I would consider the polishing a finishing pad. Again, I dont have experience with them. I plan to include some in my next order to try them.Thank you very much, looking forward to trying out the MF polishing pads and if they're as good and easy to use as you say, well, I'll be ordering some more for sure. Didn't see a finishing MF pad though, do they have one?
BTW, great avatar, that's THE color/stripe combo!
Let us know how those pads are thinking of using MF for the gel-coat.Well, they have a cutting and a polishing. I would consider the polishing a finishing pad. Again, I dont have experience with them. I plan to include some in my next order to try them.
Thanks on the avatar. That is Ford picture (not actually my car). A friend of mine went the unveiling of the car at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. He met Carroll Shelby and had him sign it for him. He knew I was going to order one just like it, so, he sent it to me.
As you said, it is THE color. I like many of the other colors. However, I chose that one based on the fact that all of the original Shelbys (1965) were that color scheme. I couldnt be happier with my choice. I just took the cover off of it about 2 hours ago and unhooked the battery maintainer. Wont be long I will be driving it.
