97 GMC Jimmy Correction (Multiple Rayviews)

I love working on old beat up daily drivers, and this weekend I got to work on a 1997 GMC Jimmy that hasn't seen a wash in a looooooooooooooooooooooong time. I was limited in time for this detail so I didn't have a chance to take too many pics, but I was excited to use a few new products.

The owner loves this vehicle, but thought the finish was too far gone to spend any time making it look better. I knew with a little time and the right products that it could look much better.

Here's a closeup of the grill that showed the condition of the entire vehicle. Contaminated, oxidized, swirled out and tons of water spots :(

Swirls galore.

Neglected wheels and tires.

IMG_0788.JPG

The entire truck looked like it was washed with a Brillo pad.

I started with the shoes. I knew the tires needed serious help so I grabbed TUF SHINE's Tire Cleaner.

While the brown sludge was melting off the tires, I applied Wolfgang Über Wheel Cleaner to the wheels.

With a little agitation...

The wheels were so bad they required a couple applications and extra agitation.

IMG_0805.JPG

Much better.

IMG_0807.JPG

Now to wash the vehicle, I grabbed a bottle of Detailers Pro Series Auto Bath Shampoo. P.s. It smells like Bananas

IMG_0811.JPG

After washing, I knew the paint was heavily contaminated because it felt like 45 grit sand paper. So I used Iron X to dissolve all the nasty stuff from the paint.

IMG_0813.JPG

IMG_0816.JPG

After using Iron X, I grabbed a Nanoskin AutoScrub Medium Grade Wash Mitt and Detailers Pro Series Universal Clay Lubricant. This is one of the new products I've been itching to try. I went straight for the Medium grade because of the condition of the paint and I would be polishing afterwards.

IMG_0817.JPG

After using the Nanoskin AutoScrub Wash Mitt, I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to a Clay Bar again. While moving the wash mitt back and forth, I could feel the "gritty" feeling disappear into a smooth finish.

After drying the vehicle with a Guzzler Microfiber towel, I could see the paint had already significantly improved.

On the right track!

Amazing what a 2 Bucket Wash + Autoscrub can do...

IMG_0822.JPG

After decontaminating, I pulled Jimmy into the AG Show Car Garage for inspection...

I started with a test spot and the least aggressive method first. I wanted to use Menzerna Polishes this time with a Cyclo Polisher. I quickly learned this paint was HARD. Menzerna Super Finish (SF-4000) had no effect on the paint. I tried Menzerna SIP - Super Intensive Polish (IS 1500) and I started to see progress...but I knew I could get better results. So I used Menzerna Power Gloss Compound (PG 1000) and got great results.

Before I got started on the rest of the vehicle, Nick suggested I try out Menzerna Fast Gloss Compound (FG-400); and I'm glad he did! FG-400 was thicker than PG1000 and worked faster. Surprisingly, Fast Gloss Compound got the paint glossier, faster :) .

Getting there!

Optimum Metal Polish + White CCS Pad by hand on the metal trim.

For the LSP, I decided to go with a sealant + wax combo. I didn't have 8-12 hours to wait for a sealant to cure, so I went with BLACKFIRE Crystal Seal Paint Sealant.

Nice and shiny

The owner was ecstatic with the results. The truck looked much worse originally in person and much better after the detail.

Products used:
TUF SHINE Tire Cleaner
Wolfgang Uber Wheel Cleaner
Detailer's Auto Bath Shampoo
CarPro Iron X Iron Remover
Nanoskin AutoScrub Medium Grade Wash Mitt
The Supreme Guzzler Waffle Weave
Menzerna Fast Gloss Compound
BLACKFIRE Crystal Seal Paint Sealant
Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant
Sprayway Glass Cleaner
Dodo Juice Blue Velvet PRO Hard Wax

Now that's one heck of an improvement. Hey Ray, maybe you can take my car in the shop this weekend...
Im the MAN

Nice job Ray!

I see no mention of what machine was used?

Thanks!

I used a Cyclo Model 5 Pro with Orange Cyclo Pads on most of the vehicle and a Griots Garage 6 inch polisher with a 3.5 inch backing plate and LC 4 inch CCS pads on the smaller panels/pillars.

Great job with amazing results. How did you get in the tight areas of the mirrors where it meets the body?

Looks new again, owner was probably really happy with the results.
Nice job and review of the products.

wow now shouldnt that be matt mirror ?

or was it oxidized single stage black

and one more question
black fire crystal seal is it enought to do one coat to make it have the same durability as normal sealant or should it be 2 coats or 3 ?

Awesome writeup
Can you compare tuf shine tire cleaner to mothers foaming wheel and tire cleaner?

Nice work Ray!

I knew you buffed something out while Yancy and I were in Nebraska but just now clicked on this thread to check out the before and after shots.

Very impressive.

Nice write-up too plus the list 'o links to the store to make it easy for anyone to duplicate your results.

Thanks everyone!

Fast Gloss (FG-400) with an orange CCS pad by hand.

Oxidized single stage black. I wanted to clean them up and after inspecting I figured they were painted. I did a small test spot with FG-400 by hand on the underside and sure enough it turned glossy. I looked for replacement mirrors for a 97 GMC Jimmy and they make them in both flat black plastic and painted like this:

k_source_mirrors_62010G.jpg

As far as durability BF Crystal Seal isn't going to replace a traditional sealant like BF Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection, but being able to apply it and have it cured in about 10 minutes then topping it with a carnauba like Dodo Juice wax; the owner will easily get months and months of protection.

Awesome writeup

I've made a note and will do this on the next detail. I have a BMW coming up with some nasty brake dust.
