A little PNS experiment coming up

I got some Sonax PNS for Christmas (thanks wifey for wrapping the gift I bought for myself!). I’ve used it on my car, and so far I’ve been impressed. Application is a breeze, and it seems like less dust/dirt is adhering to the paint.

So the experiment... I washed my wife’s Sienna the other day, and it looks like the year-plus old Duragloss 111 has finally given up on the vertical panels. So I clayed and applied PNS to the passenger side front door only. We have some rain coming up this week, so I wanted to see the difference in wet dirt repellence between PNS and basically unprotected. I’ll post some pics of accumulation over the next few weeks.

Any guess on whether it will be a significant visual difference?

IMO not a very good test. Any protection will do better than no protection. Now if you do Duragloss 111 on one door and PNS on another, that would be a durability or even a dirt repellency test.

Fair point. I just want to see how effective PNS is in general. I have used a lot of liquid sealants and carnuba, and they seem to attract some dust and debris. Maybe I’ll put some Fuzion on the back door after a couple weeks.

My guess (based solely on the above washing
and claying regimen) is that there will be
no significant visual difference(s).

TO WIT:

Putting: ...”basically unprotected”...
‘under the proverbial-microscope’:

•Depending on what product—with which
you washed the Sienna—there actually
could be some Duragloss 111 remaining
on the unclayed panels; that is to say:

-basically could still have some protection, IMO.

I have never used another product that repels water and dirt as well as PNS. Because of how well it works, I’ve not made the switch to ceramic coatings as of yet. Topped with BSD, I think it’s the perfect combination for me and the conditions under which I drive and maintain my car.

This is what I’ve come to expect on the sides of my car, very little water and dirt, even in a heavy shower with dirty spray from the roads.

That’s what I like to hear. The minivan is my experimental car. The side of it take a beating, and I don’t wash it often. I would love to see one relatively clean door next to a dirty one. We’ll see in a couple weeks.

How often do you apply PNS?

When I looked at it today, somewhat clean, I did think there might be some DG left. I think it might just have some road grime affecting the beading. We’ll see tho. I’ll post pics.

Sorry for the late response... I last applied the PNS 15 months and 15K miles ago. But my paint still looks fresh, clean and shiny; even though I tell myself it’s time for mild correction and a new coat of PNS, I have so many reasons not to:
- like I said, the paint still looks good
- car is garage-kept
- silver does not readily show imperfections
- I use BSD every few weeks, so that “freshens” the protection and repels water and dirt quite effectively.
- I hit the hood and driver’s door with some Xxxx’s iron remover (not sold here) last week, and there was absolutely no color change except for the lower rocker panel and bottom 10% of the driver’s door, and hardly any change at that. I suspect the brake dust more than anything else.

You know what they say... if it ain’t broke....

Note that unprotected paint tends to hold on to water pretty equally, so it may also dry fairly quickly. This compared to beads which are piles of water that can actually dry rather slowly (when a car sits, it obviously dries faster when the car is in motion) compared to an unprotected surface’s even, continuous distribution of water.

But, even if the unprotected side dries as fast or faster than PNS if the car is only sitting in place, the difference should be that the unprotected surface is also sucking up the road grime equally as the water evaporates. The PNS protection should cause most grime to be trapped with in the “water piles” (beads) and mostly evaporate away except what you may eventually see as water/dirt spots, which generally wipe off pretty well. The unprotected side is likely holding on to the dirt that it holds until the paint is polished or deep cleaned.

Sorry for my ramble, these are just my thoughts. Doesn’t mean I’m always right (just ask my wife).

First pass at results... and there is a significant difference. This is after a couple days of rain.

Here is the untreated door. Many spots.

Call me impressed.

I’ll keep everything as is for another couple weeks. After then next rain I’ll wash both doors and apply some good carnuba wax to the untreated door... see how that compares.

I’ve been using PNS for my winter protection for several years now. Stuff is bulletproof. I went to coating route and actually came back to PNS. It’s so versatile.
Right now I have it over the DG 111 I had earlier this year. I did a somewhat of a strong wash to remove any traffic film and simply applied over it for the winter. I know some on here will cringe hearing that. Hell Mike P. Puts it over jeweling wax. If it will stick over carnauba, it will stick over anything. Will maybe not last as long, but in my experience I get an easy 6+ months easy even slathering over whatever LSP I had on for the summer.

Nice testing jdgamble!

Will be interesting to see how does on the other side between another protection product or you maybe apply it on the unprotected paint you do the testing on now.

You who like PNS and BSD. I think honestly if you have a great maintance. You should look into the Sonax CC36 coating. Now this coating is basicly made with the same protection technology that's in PNS and BSD. And also this is a little strange as the 36 is in months the coatings longevity claim. But that is if you maintain it with PNS every 6 months. On it's own it's around a year of longevity from it. So if you have a great maintance where you don't get a lot of marring from the washes and drying during 2-3 years. I think that the Sonax CC36 coating could be an option to go with for a great base protection. The Guz did a 1 year run with CC36 coating and it did well for him. I just mean that you can get a little higher protection with the CC36 and maintain it with PNS and BSD. See the added cost of the PNS as a top coating and it's pretty good value for it. Maybe the CC36 is a little high priced for what it gives you. Sonax reps says that the CC36 is needed to be topped and recommended to use PNS every 6 months. See it as a decon wash and topping it with PNS and you have a high performance coating for 3 years. Just an option to you who like the PNS and BSD and want to get a long high performance coating on your paint.

Edit: looked up the price of it on AGO and I think it's been lowered actually or I didn't remember correctly LOL. The Sonax CC36 Coating is at $80 which is in the middle of the consumer coatings. What I remembered it where over $100 at least before. Maybe others remember how it where. Anyways it's decent priced I think at $80.

Just a little interim review comment. I also put PNS on my car a couple weeks ago. Since then it has rained multiple times and I’ve been driving all over wet roads. I sprayed it down with a pressure washer yesterday. Here is what it looks like.

Pretty crazy. Very few water spots. In general, it looks like it was just washed.

PNS, very versatile. I'm itching to go with a DIY ceramic coating, but can't convince myself it's worth it while I still have PNS on my shelf.

Your bimmer looks great!
