Well I guess I won't have to wait until spring to do some detailing. On my way to work this morning a car in front of me kicked up a license plate that ended up making it's way across my hood and onto my windshield. It left a nice foot long mark on the hood, and several small marks on the windshield. Thankfully it landed flat, and I can tell most of the mark on the hood and a few on the windshield are just paint transfer, so I'm hoping it will all buff out fine. On the bright side I called my insurance agent, and she found out that since it was a "flying object", that it would be covered under comprehensive, which I have a zero deductible for. Man, the fun never ends......

Grimm, I hope it all buffs out for you. One time I was behind a truck carrying a bunch of junk and something fell off and but a big dent in the hood of my car. It can really ruin your day.

Yeah, it's a relief that I wouldn't have to pay if I need to get it fixed, but I really don't want to go through all that. I do have an extra car right now at least if I do have it done.

Sorry to hear about that. Did you save that licence plate? Did that person drove away? Any pictures of the damage?

I don't know where the plate came from. It was dark, but I did see it get kicked up from the tire of the car in front of me. No pictures, but maybe I'll take some when I get home in case I need them for proof to the insurance company. I didn't think about getting the plate. When it happened I thought it just hit the windshield, but then saw the damage on the hood when I was at work. Maybe I'll see if I can find it on the way home.

Oh gosh Grimm, I am so sorry!!:(
At least you are ok - it wasn't something that broke your windshield. :) I guess instead of buffing, especially with a zero deductible, let the insurance handle it; they will repaint it and you can perfect it.
Let us know how it goes.
What kind of idiot drives around with his/her plate hanging off anyway? Was it some old wreck of a car?
Lauren

I'd really rather not hastle with getting it repainted, so I'm hoping it will all buff out. I'm pretty certain it will on the hood. The plate hit the car flat, and it looks like all paint, probably from the white lettering most of our plates have. There is one scratch on the windshield that I think may be a gouge, but the others look like rubbed paint.

I was thinking though, if I find that there are scratches, but I can live with them and I find the plate on the way home; I wonder if I could get away with calling up my insurance in like two years when I have more stone chips and defects on the hood and get it fixed....

Oh gosh . . . .lol. . . I don't think that would work, nor would it be a good idea. I usually play it straight - I would get it fixed now instead. Otherwise you just made more work for yourself.... anyhow, what are you going to do about the windshield gouge (sp?) ?

Your whole deal made me wonder if the Insurance company would cut a deal with you to fix it yourself since you have the experience. They could pay you for products used and your expertise and still be money ahead as far as they're concrned. Could be a win/win situation for you both if it's something that you can fix as good as new. Let us know how this plays out.

Good point, Jimmie. If they just compensate him with the money it would take to repair it, he would probably come out of it even better. Except sounds to me like the windshield needs a replacement or repair at the very least.
Lauren:)

abrcrombe, it was the black Bonneville in my sig.

haha, I was pretty much joking Lauren. I'm sure once I called the agent, they would probably remember me calling about it before.

Jimmie, you make a good point. I know years back my parents had some trees fall in a storm and the insurance company paid them for their time to clean up the mess rather than them hiring someone. I think I'll call them on that. Thanks!

Well, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the car fixed. I cleaned up all the paint transfer, and unfortunately am left with mostly scratches. There is a six inch one on the front of the hood, with another 2-3 incher next to it, and 3 smaller scuff scratches up by the wiper. Then there is a scratch in the glass of the windshield. I'm sure the scratches up by the wiper would buff out easy, but not so sure about the ones down low. You can see a chip in the leading end of the scratch on the front edge, and it looks to be through to the primer I think, but it sure doesn't look very deep. So I'm worried that the paint isn't very thick if I tried to buff it much.

That is just so sad, i was crying about my small stone chips (????) when i washed my car today, but that is nothing compared to what you got there.

yikes

:mad:reminds me of the time I was coming back from a car show and a friend driving in front of me kicked up a "tread" from a semi that was shedded and smashed my headlight, dented my hood, front bumper, lower valance(where the fog lights were), smashed the right fender, then flew up and dented the top of my mustang. That damn thing ate me up!! $2300 later and half the car repainted it was all good except the paint was ever so slightly a different shade of white than the rest of the car, but you had to be looking for it to notice. That one hurt.

I guess we can both be thankful we weren't decapitated!

The pictures don't look good Grimm. It's looks like it going to spend a little time in the shop. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

You can't really tell from the afters, but the big mess with the three connected scratches on the left of the top picture was mostly paint. Still a little scuffed, but not bad. It's that long one and the small one on the right that could be trouble. I'm just worried that A) they won't pay for a repaint, but just to have it buffed or B) it gets repainted but looks bad. I guess if they will only pay to have it buffed I'll see if they would pay me to do it, and hopefully it comes out OK.
