I am trying to improve my car wash routine and make it more efficient. I would like to touch the finish less during the drying process. I would like to get feedback before investing some serious cash. I was looking at metro air force blaster or ego five amp leaf blower. I currently use a metro sidekick to get water out of lights, grill, mirrors and wheels but it takes time to get out extension cord and the work it takes to get around the car and takes a bit too long. The leaf blower worries me about how safe it is to use as a car dryer. As much as I would like to be able to air dry the car without touching the finish with a MF towel I think if I buy either of these two tools I will end up drying the car with a MF towel at the end.

I have the Metro Master Blaster and it works great. I mounted it on the wall in my garage and purchased an extension for the hose (30' total). If you have a good sealant or coating on your car the water flies right off - I rarely have the need for a drying towel. If I do a 2BM wash the final rinse is always done with deionized water from my CR Spotless system. The only downfall is rolling up the hose but that takes very little time compared to drying with a towel.

If the finish is not protected with wax does it defeat the purpose of using a leaf blower to air dry?

if you have a solid coat of wax/sealant/coating and after your sheet as much of the water off, there will be hardly any water on the surface and yes it will fly off a lot easier (no resistance). keep in mind that no blowing device is going to blow every last drop of water off the surface. i would just pick up a leaf blower if you don't want to spend a lot of money. you can get a good one for around/under $50 that will do the job just fine...
