alternative to swirl/scratch remover???

i was watching american restoration on tv and rick dale (owner) says that you can use talcum powder and/or corn starch to remove buff marks or swirls? i wanted to see a before/after and he did but the after was not a clean indication (taped off surface like members here do) anyways, i was wondering if this is for real and if anybodys heard of this or tried it? i have black i'm not sure if i'm going to try it on my car but he (rick) went at a black piece of metal with a dual action and some powder and i dont know, just thought i would ask and see what the feedback is.

You and I were watching the same episode at the same time! If you looked closely though, it didn't actually remove them. You could still see some faint buffer trails in the sun when he moved the panel. I think the powder just helped hide the trails. Better just to use swirl remover and level the paint instead of hide it.

This topic has been coming up as long as I've been posting to the Internet. I think they used this in the old days on "single stage" paints when they didn't have or know of anything better. (Words chosen very carefully)

Clear coats are very different than old school single stage paints.

Also keep in mind a LOT of new technology has been introduced in the last few years and for the most part, if people aren't on forums like this how they going to find out about all of it?
