Alternatives to Halogen

Are there any lights that show imperfections like halogen, but don't use up as much energy and ones that don't get that hot?

Maybe some sort of LED light but they will cost much more my friends dad works for a company that makes them like the ones in traffic lights and he had a little light about the size of a AA bat and it ran of a AAA and it was as bringt as the sun
