No Longer Tapes Up Before Polishing? This is by far the most hated part of the detailing process for me. I just completed a full correction this past weekend and when it came time to tape it up, I just couldn't do it. I used the DA MF system for compounding and went straight to PO85rd with a rotary for finishing. With the rise of thinner, smaller pads and the slower recommended speeds for the DA MF system , I find that my pad precision is good enough to do without the tape. :buffing:

I would rather take the little time it takes to tape rather than bother with trying to clean up a mess.

I usually only tape up surfaces/trim for which removal of excess polish will be difficult or time consuming.

I find that I am more willing to do a quick follow up in the cracks and crevices with an APC and small boars hair brush than tape. I dunno why:dunno:

I hear ya on that one. I never was a fan of the tape but I do use it on plastic/rubber trim so I wont get polish on it. I also use the tape to give me a barrier from the paint to the convertible top, I havent gotten wax on rag tops before but I hear it is a real pain to take off.

Yeah, I could see using it on the scenario with the convertible top. I guess it just depends on the situation at hand.

I always tape, it makes for easier and faster clean up when I am finished polishing. I would much rather take to time to tape than take the time to scrub random dots of polish off of the trim. Sometimes it's not to bad, but other times its a huge pain. Also Taping doesn't really take that long on most vehicles. I don't think I've ever spent more than 20 minutes taping an entire vehicle, so it's not that big of a deal to me.

I hate it, but do it.

When my garage gets in the 90 degree range with the humidity from washing, the tape becomes a sticky mess. Its a PIA but it does beat cleaning any residue.

Maybe I correct at a slower, more meticulous pace, because seldom do I have more than a couple spots that need cleaning up and the time it takes me to do so is only a fraction of the time it would have taken me to tape.

Being in the south, I agree with the humidity making the tape a sticky mess. Just another reason why I hate it.

I taped last week for the first time. Yeah it took a few minutes to do ,but in tight areas like windshield pillar, around glass and headlights, I didn't need to be careful, the tape was my protector. And it was kinda fun peeling it off and making a tape ball. In the past, without tape, the pads hitting rubber trim picked up dirt, with the tape I didn't have to worry about that. I guess it depends on the car as well as to how much tape and where its needed.
