Hey all,
My name is Carsten and I'm from Utah. I have a 87 5.0 mustang that I really enjoy working on. I've owned it for about 12 years now. I finally got the motor to about where I want it and recently have taken on the project of the exterior. A couple months ago I took a community education auto body class so that I could repaint it. I did most of the work myself and I am just now in the finishing stages. I have always loved washing and detailing it but with 25+ old paint it just wasn't an extreme looker. I can't wait to have it all put back together and a fresh clean paint job to start with. I have every intention of keeping the paint as good looking as I can and have already ordered a bunch of stuff off this sight. I'm excited to learn more of your guys' ways and to become an above average detailer. Here's a few pics.

This was taken about a year ago before the new paint.

Welcome.

What grits are you planning on sanding with and how many shots of CC did you shoot? Just curious.

I'm interested in this project. I am actually planning on finishing the BMW I started but never got the chance to finish until now. I plan on taking a bunch of pictures this time =D

I'm just waiting for Amazon to deliver some of my new camera gear so I can try and document this whole process better. Unfortunately I don't have very many of the wet sanding pictures.

When you spray go heavy with the clear. Finishing with a high grade paper (5000) will leave you with an incredible finish

I love build threads :hungry:

Its got 3 coats of clear on it and I started wet sanding with 1500 grit but decided to go with a 2000 grit. It's been a very long and frustrating process. The class is at one of the High School Tech centers which has pretty decent equipment but since it gets used mostly by high schoolers it gets pretty abused. I took the class not knowing much about auto body so I was really at the teachers mercy. But his expectations of what a good paint job should look like were far below what mine were. So on alot of things I had to learn the hard way. If I was to go back and do it all again I think it would turn out a ton better. Plus with it being black it just made it all that much harder. But it is really straight though. I did 3 coats of primer with a guide coat every time. It's got a new rear and front bumpers and a brand new fiberglass hood. I'm ready for it to be done though so I can enjoy driving it again.

Yeah this is one of those things if I could go back and do it all again I would do differently. I figure in the hole project im easily over 100 hrs of just sanding, But now i'm wishing I had done even more to get an even better finish. I'm in the final buffing stages right now but am ready to just pay someone to do it. I just don't have the total know how and experience with a rotary buffer, and I'm just kind of burnt out on the hole project. I feel I've done pretty good so far but I just want it looking as good as it can.

Welcome to AGO! I see your user name includes Vortech. What's the current set-up under the hood? Great choice of car, can't wait to see what it looks like!

Thanks, It's got full intake and exhaust, AFR 185 heads, F303 cam, 42lb injectors, upgraded mass air, full bolt ons and just last winter I slapped on the Vortech. It's the V-3 SI. It's awesome. I also put on the Anderson Power Pipe and upgraded the fuel pump. Couldn't be happier with the outcome power wise. What about you? any goodies?

Wow, sweet set-up. I must say that makes me quite jealous! haha I haven't done anything to mine really. It has an intake, exhaust, and MSD ignition. Nothing really. I bought it that way and other than cosmetic changes I think I'm going to leave it that way. You don't find too many stock or very close to stock foxbodys so I'll just leave it at that I guess.

Sweet fox body, you don't see too many with t tops. I have a 88 gt convertible, mostly stock.

NICE ! would ya care to sell it ? I've wanted a fox body for a long time now

Well from your pic it looks super clean. I like the two tone, I contemplated doing that with mine. And that's cool that your satisfied with where its at...that's half the battle right there.

Yeah I'm pretty lucky that I found it. I didn't even really think anything of it when I bought it. It wasn't until a couple years later I realized how rare the t-tops are.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'll have to pass. I've got more friggin money into this thing than I could ever get out of it lol.
