My GF's car's hood and trunk have had the clear coat almost completely peeled and chipped off (Dark blue Honda Civic).

Is there any hope for getting it to look OK without painting it? We plan to paint it in the future, but it's pricey and not at the top of our list.

On my friends nissan, he had some peeling on his fender. I helped him do a temporary fix. First we wet sanded the affected area where the color paint and peeled clear meet, and wet sanded with 2000 to kind of level the two in order to make it feel smooth, then we just got a spray can of clear paint and blended it from the area where the clear coat is still good and over the peeled area. Then we wet sanded again to make it skooth

I guess it's worth a try at this point. Can't get much worse.

Sanding, then shooting a new layer of clear actually does work.
But don't waste your time with AutoZone type clear.
Get this stuff, SprayMax 2K Urethane Clearcoat | Aerosol Touch Up | AutomotiveTouchup

It has both the high build clear and the activator in the same can.
BUT YOU MUST USE A RESPIRATOR WHEN SHOOTING IT!
It can be very dangerous if breathed in.
It will outlast the "cheap stuff" by many years. Plus, it dries hard enough to sand if needed.

"it is especially used for larger surfaces (1 or 2 car parts)."

Think 3 cans will do the roof and trunk? And do you know if it will spray well if I'm holding the can vertically for those surfaces?

I have N95s, a few full face APRs, and an SCBA at home. haha.

Sounds like it's time to just pickup a new car.

yeah if you can afford 2k clear, its your best bet...otherwise get some autmotive clear and and put an extra coat of clear, let it fully harden and and sand. its UV resistance wont be as good as 2k but its cheaper, just keep some sealants and waxes on it. my friends nissan has the walmart clear coat on it after 2 years even with winters still
