Do you have to use the lubricant specifically designed for clay bars? I seem to go through a whole bottle on every car. Is there a cheaper option?

Yes there certainly is and I'm glad you asked.

Mix 2 ounces of Meguiar's Gold Class car wash in 22 to 25 ounces of water you're off and running. The ratio isn't all that critical but if you use these approximations you be making clay lube for about $0.25 gallon..:props:

The one that I use is DP No Rinse. Dilution ratio is on the bottle. It's not much so it becomes a good bang for the buck. Plus, you've got a product that can multi-task.

:iagree:

Where do you buy this?
I know where you can get some dehydrated water, it's very portable and doesn't weigh much so it's very easy to carry and I can get it for a good price.

Hmm, never thought of that. GC is my fav regular car wash. How do you compare it to a NR mixed to lube or QD strength.

Hey Craig,

I used Meguiar's Gold Class as an example because of its availability but you can substitute just about any concentrated wash in its place...

I have mixed a No Rinse wash for use as a clay lube and this works quite well also...

Any car wash can be a clay lube. I used to wash the car than not rinse/dry it and pull it into the garage to Clay it.

But now I rinse it, resuds it, pull it into the garage and with clay lube, I clay it.

But yeah BobbyG said i best, you can pretty much any car wash soap diluted with water to give it a slick surface for you to clay your car.

Hey everyone. I know this is an old thread, but it comes up when you search "clay lube substitute" on Google, so I assume many people refer to it. I want to add that I tried using some car wash soap, specifically Meguiar's Gold Class, mixed roughly 1:12 and it worked well; however, my clay did deteriorate and crumple slightly. This is something to keep in mind for those that choose to create their own clay lubricant. Thanks for the great tip.

Garry Deans Infinite Use Detail Juice is very good for the $$$. It has many uses and Lube is one of them. You can get 55gals out of one gal. makes it a great buy.

Yeah but a gallon of IUDJ is $160. ONR in a gallon jug is $40 for 64 gallons of clay lube.

64 gallons, damn! I think you beat Garry Deans deal. I do want to try ONR. Can you use it to clean interiors and put it on tires for shine as well? I know you can use it as QD and waterless wash/rinse less wash.
