Hey all. Anyone detail airplanes on here? Looking for a startup guide for it. Is it a special paint or is it like car paint. Can i use my regular products on it or is there special plane only products. If any plane detailers can take a bit and give me a general difference guide between cars and planes that would be awesome. Its something i would like to eventually get into. Thanks all!

I only rarely do planes, but depending on size the leading edge might be the only metal part of the wing, with the rest being fabric, I always research the plane when they call and if your at a smaller airport there's usually mechanics hangers, those guys are knowledgeable and usually don't mind explaining where is safe to clean/wax on the planes, what kind of plane are you working on? I can make some calls and get any info you need

B&B can give you a TON of information for planes...I'm sure he will chime in.

I wish you the best of luck. You don't want to use automotive products on aircraft. Use aviation approved products, there's a reason for it and it's not just to take your money. Don't use products containing silicone. Tape of static ports and pitot tubes with water resistant tape and make sure you hang a marker made from something lightweight to remind you that you are near the pitot tube(s). Use Plex-All to clean the windows with, while cleaning go in the direction of airflow. Don't go in circles on the windows. Do not degrease the landing gear.

As for the paint, it's harder than automotive paint for a reason. Check with your local airport to see what their restrictions are. You may have to reclaim your wash water so be prepared for that. Start shopping for insurance. Depending on the size of the aircraft will determine the amount of insurance you will need to carry. Planes and parts are not cheap.

B&B will chime in shortly and should be able to fulfill any and every question you may have bud :props:

I couldn't agree with rwright more. Nail on the head. There is a reason why I dont detail my plane on a regular basis. If you book a low wing you will find out why. Good luck on the venture and definitely get a ton of aircraft knowledge before hand. Know what does what and why.
