As the title says, I just finished with my old bottle of Armor-all car wash and am looking for some new stuff. The price difference between brands is staggering:(. I was looking at the mequires gold class wash, but I don't know......

gold class is a very nice soap. i use pinnacles body work shampoo and optimums soap. there all great!!!!

boutique products offer better ingredients usually, not designed as a price point product for Wally World. Optimum, Duragloss, and Poorboys rock !

If your looking otc, Megs Gold Class will suffice, Duragloss is top notch but rare to find otc. AG has plenty of good washes, of which can be purchased in larger units (gallons) making cost savings even better, Duragloss is one of the top around and cheap.

New Armor All stuff like tire gel, protectant etc are good products, but the wash is crap from what I've heard.

DP,Optimum, Duragloss, and Poorboys all are top notch!

I have used AA a while back and it was awful. The suds did not last very long in harder water. I use DG and Mothers and they are both significantly better.

All washes definitely are not the same. There are some real crappy soaps out there.
gold class is a very nice soap.

:iagree: I always have a gallon on my shelf.

Also as Killr mentioned in his post, Poorboys also has quality soaps at a great price.

Worlds Best Wax Auto Shampoo. All natural, no heavy detergents or phosphates. After that I use another mass market brand for most of my detailing.

I like Meg Gold Class for OTC it works great and smells awesome too, but any soap from AG will work great too!

Megs Gold Class is the best OTC soap, but not as good as Optimum, Poorboy's SS&S, or Duragloss...
Also, dillution ratio, you can use just one 1oz for a wash, where with Gold Class you would use more...

Nothing wrong with Gold Class it's a solid performer, I do prefer Optimums car wash though (a couple of notches above it ;) ). NXT is good as well it's just strong and can weaken your wax/sealant.

The reason I ask this question, is beacuse soap is derived from the salts of fatty acids. The main ingredient in soap/shampoo is sodium lauryl sulfate.

Does the dedicated car wash shampoos contain sodium?

Sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate is sulfonic acid and sodium
Makes suds

Other ingredients in almost all soaps/shampoo's - cocoamidoethanoline or similar short name
Coconut derived - don't know what purpose it serves

Jeff's Werkstatt does not contain sodium sulfate which is good as that can weaken sealant/wax over time, dry out the paint after a while (effects slickness) and cause black trim pieces (textured) to go white and specky

Plant based surfactants (surface active agents) would be a better choice than chemical

Their are differences in brands. I find almost all boutique shampoo's to resist hard water due to water softeners in the formula

I found Four star ultimate shampoo to be a little harsh on soft and hard exterior trim pieces, textured ABS plastics and slickness of paint and glass
Still a top shampoo. Especially if you own a Subaru WRX (different plastics than Aussie Fords and Holdens)

Optimum old formula had no sudsing power or enough lubrication for my liking
Pinnacle was too alkalinish
Poorboys is nice and Driven to Perfection Wash Concentrate is too as it contains gloss enhancing oils that don't wash away, slickness enhancers and a percentage of the same sealant thats in their auto polish product (non abrasive)

Buy yourself some pool PH testing strips and test each shampoo you buy
Firstly in the bottle and then when mixed with water in the bucket

PH level should be between 7.0 and 7.5 to 7.8 maximum
I've seen PH of 6, 5.5, 8, 9 and 11 with shampoo's

Meguiars washes were the worst.
NXT is too strong, soft wash gel leaves stains on some single stage paints
Needs machine polishing to fix
