ok, new here, can someone please educate me with regards to backing plates?

what does "hook & loop" mean? what are the different kinds/types?

I currently have a meguiars DA (G100 model). do i have to replace the backing plate to use LC pads?

thanks guys

Ok first what kind of polisher do you have?
Hook and Look means Velcro~

Ok, as stated hook and loop is the velcro, and the Meguiars backing plate is just that. One thing about that backing plate is... I don't like it. :) Go with LC backing plate and pads, or if you have even more money, get the Edge2000 pad kit. Two sides and awesome quality.

Hahaha! I love your screen name. :D

Hook & loop as Meghan already said is simply good old fashioned velcro. Also, FYI the G100 you have is the exact same machine as what people refer to as the "PC." I think the G100 comes with either a 5" or 6" backing plate. So, you should be good to use 6" & 6.5" pads which are the most commonly used pad size with this machine. You can use any brand of pad Autogeek sells except Edge 2000 which does not use velcro. Using the Edge pads requires the purchase of a special "quick disconnect" adapter.

thanks, guys...

one more question. if i wanted/needed to change backing plates, do i need that flat wrench thing?

Yup! Why did you lose it? I think some tool companies sell replacement ones.

I have the same PC......the G100. My backplate came apart within 10 uses and the Meg's pads lasted no time either. If you can, get the EDGE2000 kit. I've used some of the pads for over 5 months now. Remember you are getting 2 pads in one.

Edge kit does not need a backing plate, comes with a unique locking adapter. If you prefer Lake Country pads then get a good flexible backing plate in a size that is smaller than the pads.

thanks, a little confused, though. I curently have a 5" backing plate (and 5" counterweight i might add) that came with the meguiars DA polsiher. is that any good for 6.5 pads or is it better to get the 6" backing plates?

another thing is...the way I understand it is I'd have to switch counterweights when I switch to bigger backing plates. any help with this topic is appreciated.

p.s. my head is about to blow talking about "just" pads/backing plate/c-weights

i'm not even at the "what polsh, wax, glaze to use" stage yet!!! LOL

thanks guys..

I know it's a lot to take in. But don't you just love all this? It's addicting! :)

5" backing plate is fine to use with pads up to 6.5". Add that counterweight that came with your PC. It'll help when you're at speed 5 or 6.
From what I've heard, you don't really have to switch counterweights if you move up to a 6" backing plate. 6" backing plates for pads up to 7.5"

Hope that helps.

5" backing plate is fine to use with the 6.5 pads. There's no need to change the counterweights. The difference between the 5 and 6 counterweights is neglible. :)

I use the 6" LC Yellow urethane Backplate and really like them, I think they work great with the 6.5" pads ( Pad doesn't mushroom under presure as it does with a 5" BP) ... I bought the 6" BP counterweight for my G100 it may have made a small difference to me ( Hard to say ) But, it's only a couple dollars so try it if you want.
