Hello,

I am currently reading "The art of Detailing" and Mike mentions that the hook and loop system on backing plates wears off after a while and when that happens you need to replace the backing plate.

What is not mentionned is how long that takes? Are we talking 10 hours of use, 100, 1000? Do you guys keep spares in case yours die? Are there warning signs?

I've had tons of hours on mine, I've never had an issue. If you're doing this as a hobby I'd be completely shocked if you needed more than two of one type the rest of your life.

I've had some last years and some months. I don't recall what failed sooner than others.

Nah I will be doing this for a living when my company is finaly up and running.

Then it wouldn't hurt to have at leather 3 on hand at all times. I usually have at least 2, 6" and 5". I have 6" and 4 3/8" for flex. Plus an assortment for my rotary from 3" to 6.5"

Ya they are not that expensive I was thinking for buying one extra one for each size I will use : 5 inch and 3 inch. But you are right having 2 backup is an even better idea just in case there is something wrong with the backup one ;)

Of course I will have my current 6" on too but I don't plan to buy pads for it, they are way too expensive compared to the 5.5" ones. And from what I read in Mike's book, 5.5 is the sweet spot for DA pads.

Thanks I had already read that, but I don't use microfiber pads. Just CCS pads so far. Maybe I should use Microfiber, I don't know. I have not read anything so far that suggest they are better. I will have to look into it.

While the pictures show a microfiber pad, the bigger pictures is more about how to remove ANY pad off your backing plate carefully to do the least amount of damage to the pad and cause the least amount of wear-n-tear no matter what the face material is made out of.
