Hi guys, I have a small Suzuki Samurai that many people stop me and make me offers to buy it.
I restored inside and the engine and know is the time to put a nice paint.
Any information what is the best paint ? best clear coating ?

I looking close to show quality job.

I've always been a fan of basf products. I've used the RM Diamont line, and Glasurit. They are by far some of the nicest paints I've sprayed, and I've sprayed all major manufacturers. Sikkens would be my next favorite.

Do you have a budget? The ones I mentioned can run $1000 a gallon depending on the color.

PPG, Dupont, standox are all nice also. Figure out your budget, and I'll be of more assistance.

Dont knock the Duplicolor, look into the Paintshop sysetm. base and clear coat. 25 bucks per qt. Were you just thinking spray paint when Tundra Power mentioned it?
I dont want to be mean, but you can spend way more than you can ever sell your Samurai for in paint.

this is a Monty in black with paint shop. It finishes out very nice, Are you painting yourself? Are you trained for it or winging it? if the latter, I say stick to paint shop, its made to be forgiving.

My vote is for PPG sprayed thick. It will be pretty darn flat, and easy to work with!

NOT AT ALL

See my post and link on the monty,, remember you can spend 1000 on paint but if you finish it out wrong, It may as well be krylon.

As you can see, its like asking what is your favorite color.

Correct.

I actually have an article on that as this topic is near and dear to my heart...

Are you painting this yourself?

If not, then instead of looking for a paint system, look for a good painter. A good painter is going to already have a paint system they shoot and if they're good then they already have their gun, mixing and paint booth dialed-in.

I always tell guys to go to your local HOT ROD car shows, you know, the local shows here guys take their cool classics, muscle cars and hotrods because it's these guys in your area that get custom paint jobs, not people that own daily driver transportation cars.

Then walk around and look at the paint jobs. When you find cars with nice paint jobs ask the owner,

Who painted your car?

If you as enough people you'll start to see a very short list of painters and body shops rise to the top. Then go to these guys with your Samurai and get a quote.

Also, if you want an orange peel free finish, be sure to offer to pay more for more,

  • Time
  • Labor
  • Materials
and by doing this, the guy, (you or the painter), doing the wetsanding, cutting and buffing will have some film-build to work with.

I doubt you can find a painter and body shop that shoots one paint system that will spray a different paint system that you purchase and bring them.

Just a guess....

Now how about some pictures?

thanks guys ! good information.

Mike that's great idea. I can see how the painters do.

I put today some pics of my Samurai but don't spend a Ferrari jejejeje.... is only my toy.

one more question how many coats of clear coating is good?
only 3 ?

Some pics,
I visited 4 painters and get 4 estimates
1,000 - 1,500 - 2,900 - 6,000
all say painting base coat and 3 coats with clear coating (wet snd.)
any ideas ? like change color, decals or lines ?
appreciated all your comments.

Imron, boy I've not seem any of that in a long time. :)

Talk about tough paint! Oh yeah! :dblthumb2: IOW's that's why OTR trucks run it, goes on, stays on, and takes a beating. Come to think of it, on that vehicle it'd be well worth looking into. Especially if it ever does any off-roading.

All excellent points Mike! :props:
Especially the highlighted one.

Nice looking lil' 'zuki there dude. :props:

I wouldn't do a color change. Not unless you want to strip the entire interior out, all the dash, gauges, and everything would have to go at the VERY LEAST. But what gets horribly expensive is pulling the engine and every nut, bolt, washer, hose, pipe, brake lines, and everything else out from under the hood. (If you want to do it right.)

Just kills it when you have the exterior one color and open the doors and it's a different color. With that one though stripping the interior isn't that hard, and would be a great face lift for sure. It's just the amount of work that needs to happen to do under the hood where you need decide what works for you.

OTOH, doing a complete body off frame job on the Samurai is a TON easier than even a CJ would be. ;)
