I need to super clean my chrome rims & exhaust tips... Which still wool is best? I already got the metal polish cream.

and can I use the steel wool itself just with water or do I need a certain spray soap with them? To clean the exhaust tips & rims.

I'll sometimes use steel wool with Megs Cleaner wax, but if your choice is to use with plain water I'd probably opt to use it without anything because adding water will only encourage rust. No?

My fav brand is Rhodes American.
Yea, you can use Sonax wheel cleaner on the exhaust.

@Setec Astronomy. I had never seen those before, they look interesting.

I don't or never used it dry,99 percent of steelwool usage is with glass cleaner or apc.

As the others said. 0000 steel wool and I use CLR to lube it and knock down some of the rust and/or crud

I had some hard water stains on my chrome bumper and nothing seemed to work untill I tried some brillo pads, they were the magic bullet and my bumper looks like new. All I did was add water, they were allso amazing on my raised white letter tires they got whiter then any tire cleaner ive ever used.

There are no "best" steel-wools to clean
exhaust components and chrome wheels.

None. Ever. Period.

I agree FUNX650! I would never use steel wool on any chrome that I cared about. Jonathan

I had to take the cat to the vet earlier today... All the way up there the cat was whining and moaning... It wasn't until this thread that I finally realized what her big fuss was about. Look at the rusted chrome she had to look at! Lol.

I used steelwool on a 300 k classic Cadillac front and rear bumpers yesterday as there was a mist of fine overspray on them as well as the glass, people hear steelwool and freak out .one of the must haves in auto detailing.perfectly safe but you have to know your material, also great removing stubborn door sill scuffs on plastic.

Yeah, well, least aggressive first, and all that. I don't really have any problem with the steel wool on stainless, you've got plenty of substrate. And an old Caddy bumper (GSKR) that has tons of chrome, or has been replated with tons of chrome, not too much risk of going through it, you do have to worry a little about the hardness of ornamental chrome and whether you're leaving micro-marring that you would have a hard time polishing out.

Whatever you guys want to do, the last time I used steel wool on my car (other than perhaps in some mechanical application that I can't think of right now--but usually that's razor blade scraping) was when I used to use SOS pads on my whitewalls...which was a long time ago.
