Big roofs

Tips and tricks needed. What do you use to position yourself ideally to polish, seal and wax a roof of an SUV or Minivan? I always find myself on my toes trying to reach to polish every part of the roof. I'm always grateful for the owner who has a sun roof. That makes it easier. Already use step stool and ladder but I usually cannot get in the right place to work a polish effectively to my liking. I know someone here has a clever solution.

I use a Werner platform from Lowe's. It's a little over 4 feet long, 20 inches tall and about 15 inches or so wide to stand on. The legs fold up for storage.

With that said, I'm 5'11" and still have to get on my tippy toes to reach the middle.

First, if you're working on a "Daily Driver" then try to use a one-step cleaner/wax for the roof instead of doing a 3-step, multi-process show car procedure.


Second, like mentioned above, get the Werner Work Platform like you see Tim using here to machine wax the hood of my truck...

They are lightweight aluminum, the legs fold for storage and will work for most of what you're going to work on...

Hopefully I can explain this...I used (note past tense) a 8' step ladder that I had modified (I sawed off the rear legs) so it is NOT a regular "A" shape. Meaning, the rear legs are more vertical than canted. Then used some 'foam' (anything that wouldn't scratch the paint) around the rear legs so the ladder could 'snuggle up' to the vehicle.

When we moved, I got rid of it>>>DUMB!

If/when the Werner-style platform won't suffice...How about:
A Couple of Ladders and a Scaffolding-plank, or two.

-I believe that this type of scaffolding may be, for your big roof scenario,
just about the safest solution for: "getting high on detailing".

{See how happy this "Holiday-Detailer" is while employing such a set-up!!}

NOTE:
For: "scaffolding plank(s)"...you can always get a couple of 2X10(or 12)X8's...
and cut them to a desired length, to then be secured to the ladders.

I use a step ladder. I always use an AIO so my goal is not perfection but protection.

you need a 3 step ladder/stool. Not a 2 step or a 4/5/6 step.
a 3 step ladder is the perfect size to do any roof/boat/RV.
They are light,small and work.
