Hey guys,

Been a while since I have been on here. Been busy with life, work, etc. Really havent been spending a lot of time detailing (until last night). I just bought a new Acura TL in Crystal Black Pearl. I polished the DISO out of the front end last night. Will do the rest in the near future.

Anyway, my question is:

Do wheels that have been chromed aftermarket usually have clear coat over the chrome?

As part of the deal, I negotiated for a set of the 19 in factory wheels that are to be sent out and black chromed. The dealer does not know much about the process. He is supposed to find out, but, I am not real confident I will get the right answer. It is a guy he uses regularly for regular chrome and black powdercoating. He did not have a set of the black chrome on hand for me to check out and see if I could tell.

I want to know so that I can treat them properly. Any help is appreciated.

Regular chrome is not clear coated, so I don't see why black chrome would be.

Thank you. That is what I was trying to ask. "Is regular chrome clear coated"? So that should answer it.

Do you guys wax or even opticoat the chrome?

Yes, OC it..makes cleaning a breeze.

Sorry, but, another question. I tried searching, but, couldnt find an answer.

Can you use part of the OC, recap it and use the rest later? Or does opening it mean you have to use it right away? If I have to I can just do all my wheels at once, but would rather have some time in between so that I can take one set off each car at a time and properly prepare them for OC.

OC comes in a syringe to keep the air out. Put the black cap back on and it will last a long time.
 
I use Wolf's Rim Shield or OC on rims both work great.

-Even though powdercoated "black-chrome" has a very appealing finished-look...
It's not the same as black chromium plating.

-Although you state that (according to this dealer) he does chrome plating...
Depending on this guy's processes, and their conformity to local EPA regulations,
he may or may not be in the black-chromium electroplating business.

-Irregardless (especially with the associated costs)...
You should be able to contact the wheel-coating-guy to determine what "final finish" is to be put on your wheels:
-Black Chrome/(Black-chromium plated)...No clearcoat should be needed.
-Powdercoated "Black-Chrome"...Clearcoated (matte, satin, bright, even: none?...you should have a say-so/choice)

BTW:
-Huge price difference sometimes between having auto-wheels
powdercoated "black-chrome", and having them black-chromium plated.

I was going to do one, or the other, at one time.
Decided to stay decorative (bright) chrome instead.

I'm pretty sure the A-spec packaged wheels Acura offered a couple years ago was a "black chrome" type finish, although that's a factory wheel and not being sent out to the same place but could give you some clues.

Any pics of the new ride and how about the wheels being done, what do they look like?

Update from dealer.

The coating process is 5 layers of organic epoxy and a pure chrome metal deposit. The final layer is a DuPont powder-acrylic clear coat to protect the finish from the elements. The wheels should be cleaned with the same soap and water you use on the paint of your new car. The wheels have the same warranty as the car, 4 years/50k miles.

This is what they look like. They are the ones that come stock on the TL SH-AWD with the "Advanced Package". I did not want the advanced package as the 6spd manual was not available in that package. They are not the remanufactured ones in this link. They are brand new factory wheels that he is sending out. I will be using them in the summer and the stock wheels on the winter. Sorry for the link. I dont have them to take pics of.

I've never seen those wheels before but they look great, a high-tech lookin' wheel fits that car to a T, subscribed for updates!

That's a good question. I am a Ford guy. Always have been. In fact, this is the first foreign car I have ever bought new and only the second I have owned. I had a used BMW 528i several years ago.

When I selected my criteria it included AWD and manual transmission. The Ford did not offer MT. Acura, Subaru WRX, BMW 3 series and a few others did. After looking at the Acura, I fell in love with it. It is a really nice car. It has the right combination of what I wanted/needed in a car for daily driving.

Ford is making good cars. The Fusion offers a lot of car for the price. I certainly would have to consider it if the MT didnt matter.

I really respect the reasoning you selected, us manual guys are a dying breed, good thing I'm not in the market for a Ferrari or Lambo because I'd be screwed....no sticks offered! Its funny the base Fuzion comes with a stick but not with AWD too. How long did you have your 5 series? I ask because after owning a BMW I would've thought a brand new 3 series w/ Xdrive would've been a natrual choice seeing the new 3 series is about the same size of an older 5 series, LOL! Plus the new 4 cylinder w/ the turbo is supposed to be a sweetheart of an engine.

The BMW is a sweet car. I looked at them. Not as plush as the Acura. More sporty though. To get trimmed like I would want took me to about 8K more than the Acura. I will be using the car for higher mileage and wanted a little more plush, yet, still sporty since I will be spending about 2 hrs a day in it.

Well 2 hrs in a car is a lot of time, so lux trumps powar, you've got the Cobra for that anyways! Now as far as what your going to wrap those new wheels in, any choices there? Can I suggest one?

They are coming with a set of OEM tires which are Goodyear Eagle RS-A.

I would be happy to hear your suggestion though. I will have to replace them eventually.
 
I'm a huge fan on Continental DWS tires, year round performance in every condition! I had a set on my old Fit and they got me through a blizzard here in Chicago 3 winters ago, handled the Tail of the Dragon and have incredible grip in the rain. They're also Z-speed rated and have a 50k warrenty but I must say on a hot hatch, not so much but they do get prorated when proven not to have been abused. My fiance has em' on her Mazda 6, 35k on them and just rotated yesterday, 6/32nds and 7/32nds, so 50k will be NO problem at all.

Eagle RS-A's seem to be pretty popular but its probably because of this spelling....GOODYEAR. BTW I actually saw your wheels inperson today on a TL at the Infiniti dealeship, STUNNING!!!
