Inspecting the paint on a 1997 Black Toyota Supra (single stage paint) and I noticed that in one area on a corner near the taillight that the paint looks brown when I shine an LED light on it.

What's going on here? Thin paint? If so, would it have to be very thin to show like this? It looks fine without a light on it.

Thanks

Is it a reflection from the amber lens in the headlight/turn signal?

I also covered up the amber turn signal to make sure it wasn't a reflection from that incase anyone is thinking the same thing.

Heh I was just adding that it wasn't at the same time you asked. No, I covered the light and it's still there definitely part of the paint.

Closer shot with turn signal covered:

I have a couple spots like that on my black, 2002 996. I think for me it is some really thin paint spots. But I am unsure and would love to hear from someone who knows anything.

It looks like it could be a touchup at some point. Blacks are either brown or purple based.

There was a section of my Camaro's hood that looked brown, but only under a bright flashlight at night or at the 'perfect' angle in the noon sun. It wasn't burned through to primer, so I don't know what it was.

Could be that the light is washing out and you are getting light reflecting back too intense. Grab a pair of sunglasses and see if you still see something other than defects.

HUMP
