I've seen some of the racer guys & gals who like to flame their stainless/chrome exhaust tips by taking a gas flame to them. I do not have a picture I can post, but if you google "blue tint exhaust tips" you will see pics.

I was asked how to clean the exhaust tips. Normally I use my trusty Pinnacle Stainless/Chrome Exhaust cleaner, but I don't know if any cleaner will remove the hue created by the heat. I was going to suggest Pinnacle Chrystal Mist, or a QD, but not sure if that would remove the blue hue.

Regardless, I'd post here to see if there any thoughts regarding cleaning.

That's an oxide, normal car cleaning stuff won't touch it. If you clean it abrasively, or with something that has chemicals in it to remove oxides (metal polish) or with an acid cleaner, that will effect it.

Setec,

Thanks for your answer,

Given Pinnacle Exhaust Cleaner & Brightener is a cutting-edge metal polish designed specifically for the cleaning needs of exhausts. formulated using an advanced blend of all-natural cleaners, diatomaceous clay, and a durable anti-corrosion agent that protects the surface against heat and soot build up.

Do you think this would remove the tint, or should they just stick to a QD?

IMO that product is for removing exactly what you are trying not to.

You don't have to stick with a QD, any car wash, rinseless, waterless, (non-ammonia) glass cleaner, solvent, should all clean without removing the blue tint. You just want to stay away from anything that's abrasive or has acids or obviously, a metal polish.

Awesome! Thanks!

That blueing is pretty tough to remove in the first place. The 02 HD had extensive blueing. I'm sure you could clean the exhaust with the pinnacle to "brighten" it without removing the hue. It needs more elbow grease than a polishing rub

Yeah, I'm just trying to be conservative.

I agree, conservative is the key. The person who asked stated they used APC 1:8 and found it removed some of the oxide effect. Not like it's difficult to put back though.

To clean exhaust tips—(whether they've been
"blued" or not)—from build-up caused from being
exposed to a variety of contaminates, I'll first
use a degreaser like 303's Marine Citrus Cleaner
& Degreaser; then follow up with a glass cleaner
like Sprayway #50.

And:
Since you want to keep the "bluing"...
No need to go further by using any
metal polishes, IMO.
