well it happened after two years. apparently they didn't use a strong enough bolt for the flex edge adapter (flex uses a grade 8.8) the one that broke has no markings (i believe this means it is not rated and less then grade 8.8 in strength). well the bolt simple sheared off and the pad and plate where sitting there. luckily i had just finished the pass and was letting off the power and pressure. no damage to the car. the bolt sheared just below the flex head, a trip to the drill press to make a hole so an easy out could be used. the drill bit spun the remain piece down to the bottom then drill in real easy (another indication that this bolt was rather soft). then with a hand drill and easy out type tool removed the broken section with no problem. put the factory flex backing plate on and all is fine again. i'll probably track down the appropriate bolt with a 8.8 rating, but think of just using the regular pads not edge pads.

I could never find a reason for having a piece of steel spinning just above the surface of my paint.

Have you tried the self centering hex logic pads?

I used to use the edge pads now I use LC and hex-logic

the whole point of using the edge adapter was to be able to switch easily between 4" and 6" pads (4" fit nicely between my trucks raised panels on the roof). oh well, i still have the adapter guess i could still use it. i found a replacement bolt that fits it, just not sure that i want to use it anymore.

Scary! As a new owner of the Edge adapter this bothers me. Weird that it would shear without bending at all if it's a soft grade of bolt. Maybe it had been bending? How many times had you used it?

done about twenty cars with it. didn't notice any bending but it could have been trying to twist which could cause the shearing. replace the bolt with one that has a higher shearing strength (the factory used grade 8.8). should be able to find it at your local hardware store (ace or true value) or the big box stores may have it. its metric 8mm. the bolt head size is the critical so that the adapter that fits the pads will fit over the new bolt. (hope that made sense).
