[/SIZE]I am trying to give the paint that extra pop for a final polishing step and I cannot see an improvement in the finish after polishing with PO85RD. I am using the Flex 3401. I do not have a rotary and do not plan on getting or using one. I want to work with what I have which is the Flex 3401. Paint is soft jet black black clear coat.

I have 2 test spots where I used 205 with a LC grey pad on the left side and Wolf Gang Finishing Glaze (equivalent of Menzerna 106) with a LC grey pad on the right side. I then divided each test spot into halves (top and bottom). I used PO87MC (also called Final Polish II) with a flat LC grey pad on the bottom left side and PO85RD with a flat LC grey pad on the bottom right side. I could not see any improvement in the finish so then used flat LC blue pads with both PO87MC and PO85RD on each respective side. I broke the polish down using moderate pressure using speed 6 for about 4 passes until the polish became clear, then I reduced the pressure and the lowered the speed to 4, and then made about 4 mores passes and then lowered to speed 3 and took off all pressure for another 3 passes until the polish was just about dry. Why am I not seeing any improvent in gloss over the 205 and WG FG? I looked at it in direct sunlight, partial sunlight, and in the garage with the brinkman swirl finder. I looked at the paint from all different angels and just cannot tell any difference.

I thought PO85RD and even PO87MC gave that extra pop? If so, how do you get that extra pop?

With a rotary. :D ive used po85rd with a DA and it didnt look that great compared to a rotary.... but since you dont have one or intend to get one. Then my opinion is that you are only going to get that "pop" you are looking for by using a glaze, wax or sealant.

I've used PO85RD with a DA on soft black paint (like yours) and I could definitely see the difference.

I see no reason why you would use speed 6 with PO85RD. Your trying to message the paint with a fine polish not beat the #### out of it.

I have much better results using slower speeds on the 3401 - running at 6 is WAY too fast to start. I recommend a setting of 3.75 to 4.0 to work the polish with no need to reduce speed after the polish breaks down and flashes.

Since a rotary spins faster than the Flex I thought that speed 6 would be as close to a rotary as the Flex could get - I thought faster was better to break the polish down.

What pad did you use?

Good to know, I will try a slower speed tomorrow.

Thanks, I will try a slower speed. I thought I needed speed 6 to break the polish down.

It takes a very discerning eye to tell the difference between say 106 and 85rd. Most people would not be able to tell a difference IMO. Maybe just save yourself a step....

Speed 6 on a DA is about 1500rpm in a rotary. Witch that is too high for jewling. I normally do 1200 or 1000 rpm with po85rd. That would be maybe speed 4 or 4.5. Im just suggestion, i dont know if im correct.

Not sure I'm allowed to post this, but some nice charts on menzerna here

On some less than ideal OEM paints, you will get gloss but the underlying less than good paint layer will not make it look great,

I thought speed 6 on the Flex 3401 was about 480 rpm.

:iagree:If speed 6 on the 3401 is 1500 rpm then it's a rotary. BTW I jewel with 85rd at 1500 rpm. If you do a side by side it will be hard to see the difference.

The Flex 3401 is not a rotary.

Okay so you do need higher RPM to jewel, that why the rotary works better - the higher speed.

The Flex 3401's max rpm is about 480 which is on speed 6...why are some others saying to go with speed 4 on the Flex 3401?

Because its a forced rotation.

When you're talking about Rotary's you're talking in terms of Revolutions Per Minute; when you talk about DA's you're talking about Oscillations Per Minute.

Forgot the thread on here but someone had close to what speed vs what speed between a 3401VRG and a GG6. Will have to dig it up but yeah.

One thing is not like the other.

Also anyone of you guys use something BESIDES PO85RD that finished just as good, if not better?
