Can I use a car wax as hockey stick wax?

A lot of people use stick wax on their hockey sticks (where the tape is) to seal or protect the tape from getting water logged.

Since hockey tape is made of a cloth base, would scotch guard or even that footlocker spray work the best?

Or is there a wax compound that I have in my detailing arsenal that can do it? If anything I think it may be megs 16, but I also have Klasse SG and XMT180 I could try.

Sig says Canada i.e. no surf board, but that stuff would work I guess. I just applied Megs 16 to it, and man the tape reaks of it. There also the traditional wax white spots so yay.
