So im working on my website and since im just starting out i dont have any pictures. Is it illegal to use pictures off of google and craiglist?

I think if they're copyrighted then yes, illegal (especially without permission).

But even if it's not, I wouldn't. You are just starting off, but i'm sure you have a few friends with nice cars that you can work on and use those photos

Find a friend with leather interior. Vacuum, and document the leather cleaning process. take 50/50s, good lighting, before and afters, etc.. now do the same for headlight correction, wheel cleaning, undercarriage cleaning, trim dressing, etc.. enough photos/examples where you can spread em across your entire website

So as long as there is no copyrights on the pictures ill be fine? I plan on using only amateur photos if that makes a difference. Ive gathered some photos off craiglist in other counties that arent detailing related. Just pictures of cars being sold that are clean. Im not advertising it as my work either. I plan on using them just to have pictures of clean cars on my page.

Trust me its not what i want to do. Unfortunately i Just moved to Nevada and the only people i know are my parents. They have a Hummer and i have my Ram but i dont wanna overload my site with just a hummer and a ram lol. I plan on using google and craiglist pics until i can get enough of my own.

Why not just build your own database of you own photos it would make your life a lot less crazy. While you don't have any now if your getting work then you will have no problem building that up.

That thing you want it to take someones photos and from them to come back at you with who knows what.

In the meantime why not get some friends and family cars and do test spots or whatever kind of photos you need, do the work and snap your own photos of the work you have done.

Without permission, yes. It would be different if you were using the photos for non-commercial reasons.

If you dig enough, there are free stock photo resources out there to hold you over until you get your own. The sites I use don't have a lot of cars but here is one: IM Free - Free Design Resources | Free Images

Another place to start looking: Free Photography, UX photo resources and Image Search · linkli.st

I believe Flickr has some free for commercial use stuff as well but they usually ask for attribution.

Also, on the Google image search page, at the top there is an option for "Search Tools." Toggle that open and there is a filter for "Usage Rights" -> "Labeled for reuse". I'm not sure how Google knows the usage rights of these photos so I'd be careful with these, visiting the image source and just checking to make sure. When in doubt, don't use it.

:iagree:

I think I would feel ashamed if I tried to pass off someone elses work as my own.

search for a local car club in your area, explain you're just starting off, offer introductory prices to the first 2-3 customers, take a lot of pictures, and you're set
