1965 Candy Raspberry Mustang Show Car Makeover!

This is my friend Hink's 1965 Mustang Fastback with a Candy Raspberry, 24 Karat Gold Flake finish that cost over $20,000.00 at the time he had the car painted.

I did my best to capture the gold reflections in the finish, which you'll see below...

If you look around the source of light reflecting onto the paint you can see a gold color, that's the flake. I found it kind of hard to capture really well.

Here's a close up cropped out of the lower right hand corner of the above picture...

Before Shots
Look closely at the car, while it looks great we're going to remove all the fine swirls and put a true show car finish on this car and when I post the "After" shots compared to these you're going to see the gloss completely maxed out.

The Fastback models have the really cool look to them...

Here's the flash my camera lighting up the paint to show the swirls inside the studio, the finish, as nice as it is, is still only in category #3 in my list of paint condition categories.

Here's how the paint looks outside in bright, overhead sunlight...

This is a really sweet 1965 Mustang Fastback with a very nice paint job but here at Autogeek we're going to take it to its maximum potential.

That paint looks awesome!! Looking forward to watching you guys transform it.

What product line will you be using?

I don't always paint my car, but when I do I use 24k gold flake.

Nice looking ride, can't wait to check out the results

We're all waiting for the Gtechniq EXO to arrive into our warehouse.

I'm going to use Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover and Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish to remove the swirls because at this time we don't carry the Gtechniq polishes. I have some that my friend Sean Kelly gave me to try but the normal practice is to showcase products that are available at Autogeek.net so when people see the results from one of our project cars they can then duplicate the results with the same products.

Hink the owner and his buddy Bert want to learn how to machine polish so I'm going to be giving them some hands-on training during the swirl removal procedure.

We'll have the paint all de-swirled and stripped before we do the live broadcast so the live broadcast will focus on applying the EXO.

:)

Stay Shiny My Friends!

Awesome Mike, that car is gorgeous.

You should get an Honorary Doctorite for paint restoration. Especially with the vast products at your hands that AG has.

Candy apple red is one of my favorite colors!! :props:

Back in the day when I used to shoot custom paints like this the primer was typically gray.

Many times I'd use a catalyst hardened primer coat called Featherfill. Featherfill was a resin based primer formulated with a filler. Shooting it required a gun with a larger nozzle and corresponding needle. The beauty of this product it could fill minor surface defects allowing me to create a perfect hard finish ready for paint.

Now, I have never shot 24 Karat Gold Flake but depending on the look I was trying to achieve I'd shoot a silver flake or gold flake base coat. Once I was satisfied with the base coat I'd begin laying down the transparent Candy Apple Red color coat.

You'd be surprised how much different the finished color looks because of using a silver base vs. a gold base......

I always prefer the gold base coat because the Candy Apple Red always looked richer and deeper....:props:

Oops, didn't mean to hijack the thread Mike, just strolling down memory lane....;)

I'd like to thank my coworker Ricky for pulling me out of the office to show me this paint job.

I love candy paint. I painted my fiberglass subwoofer box I built with HOK Orion Silver, then Candy Apple Red. Can't wait to see EXO on it...

Edit: Just read your post after posting BobbyG. Valspar made a primer/filler I fell in love with. Cut my sanding and filling time in half when working with fiberglass.

+1 on body shop memory lane. When I win the lotto....first thing I'm buying is a big and fancy paint booth :)

You're welcome Ray, I couldn't let you miss this car. Especially with your fascination with candy paint. :props:

Sweet color on a sweet ride! Reminds me of the red they used on the 50th Anniversary Vette! :dblthumb2:

Is that single stage? If so, take your used polishing pads down to your local "We Buy Gold" location for a quick buck!

WOW that color looks great on that car, too bad the door edge moldings didn't "fall off".....accidently! I wonder what a paint job like that would cost now, geeeeeez!

I have Gamma Gold primer on my House of Kolor Candy Brandywine paint on my 1967 Nova. It really makes a difference in enhancing the paint color.

Hey Mike, quick question:
What microfiber towel or applicator will you be using to apply EXO tonight?
