Hey Mike-

I decided to clean the inside windows (starting with front driver side...) spraying some ONR (QD ratio, 1:16) onto a blue shop towel, and as soon as I started to put some force on the towel, I was getting this crud building up... Sprayed more QD, pushed some more... and so on... So I got home and tried Invisible Glass. Then some IPA (~1:3 ratio)

The results....

Yes these windows are tinted. Purchased vehicle last year, already tinted, probably 20%. I am worried I've already damaged the tint as I was pushing quite hard on the towel and realized I had about 10 6" vertical lines side by side... Not happy! How the heck do I get this crud off safely??? Blow dryer and plastic scraper tool??

Yes! It just gets pushed around when I try to clean it. Originally the glass looked pretty clean. I never waxed the inside but who knows, dealership may have before I purchased.

I believe it's the tint that is coming off/disintegrating.

I've had a similar problem with a customers car. It started as a small area and the more I cleaned the bigger it got. It was really hard to make it look uniform.

Would you know if that's due to poor quality/installation? Car's only 7 years old.

7 years can be an infinity if cheap tint was used. 3M or Llumar would be another story. Worst case scenario would be to remove tint and redo with a quality film.

Sounds fair! I'm going to attempt to use hot water and a MF with soap and hope the heat takes it off... Otherwise I'm going to a tint shop and see what they say.

OK so nearly boiling hot water, dawn soap, and a MF towel (and even a cotton terry towel) did not help the situation. Looks exactly the same. It seemed like the crud would start appearing in clear spots, so something is coming off for sure. It was nearly impossible to get any of it actually off.

I tried scraping it (gently) with a plastic kitchen pot scraper when it was dried... I could see this crap floating in the air. It was kind of sparkly. Worried I breathed that crap in...

I need this tint taken off, it's driving me nuts. I was able to push off most of it to the edges of the window so for now I can at least see clearly out the majority. Yikes.

Try scrapping with a razor blade scrapper. Of course at your own risk I'm no expert

Worried I would immediately damage the tint in that scenario. Anyway, I've already tried a plastic scraper but since the glass curves inward i was only touching the edges of the scraper.

Okey-doke.

Spoke to a very knowledgeable local tint guy, says it sounds like failure of the scratch-resistant clear coat. Previous owner probably cleaned it with Windex compromising the coating and I just happened to push it over the edge... Lucky me!

Yeah this seems like failure of the tint. I just started working with a quality tint shop. To remove old film we use a steamer( be generous with heat but not super generous) and then we roll the window down scrape an edge/pulling point and then side the steamer and slowly pull the tint off.
