I'm having an issue with my new Chevy cruze, specifically the windshield and hatch window. They aren't smooth, in fact when wiped with a dry microfiber the fibers seemed to get ripped right out. It also sounds like contaminated paint when a dry microfiber is rubbed across it. So far i have clayed the entire windshield twice, attempted to polish it with HD speed, and even tried wiping a section with mineral spirits in a last ditch effort.

One thing i noticed is when i wipe it with either glass cleaner or quick detailer i can momentarily see some weird staining. I'm at a loss on this one, anyone have any idea at all how to approach this? I can't even clean the windshield at this point without getting microfiber fibers all over the place.

Either polish it with Ceriglass and a rayon pad or you can use a lot of lube and a razor blade.

Yes ceriglass with a lot of patience. I recommend a rotary over a da for glass.

On a new car Ceriglass on the red rayon polishing pad should clean it up in a hurry. Glass is less porous than paint. I probably wouldn't have used speed on it. A compound on a foam cutting pad would have been a better choice. Or a foam cutting pad with a dedicated glass polish like Wolfgang Perfect Vision, I believe that's what it's called.

It's been my experience that perfectly clean dry glass will grab microfiber especially if you're putting pressure on it. Does the microfiber glide over the glass pretty easily as you're using the cleaner, then when the cleaner starts to dry and you go over it with a dry microfiber it starts grabbing?? The noise could be the fibers being ripped out. But, you have the staining. You say the glass isn't smooth, is it clear other than the staining??

A couple other explanations, some auto manufactures put a coating on at the factory, I've never come across any but have read about it on here, that could be giving you problems. If it's a brand new car it's possible the dealership put a treatment on the glass, but it seems all you tried would have removed that.

try going over it with a towel other than a microfiber, something like a shop towel that it a completely flat weave, or a waffle weave glass towel, and see what happens.

I know this is a tender nerve to touch here at AG but I still occassionaly use 0000 steel wool on glass. GENTLY USED! For those rare occassions when glass is ridiculously dirty after I've clayed it I break out some Sprayway or Stoners glass cleaner and do 2 light section passes in opposite directions and finish with another wipe of just glass cleaner.

After a wash, clay and steel wool session it's usually crystal clear and smooth.

I know, I know...

Finally I've gotten back to this. Thank you for your replies everyone. DaveT that is exactly how it is. When i spray the cleaner on the glass the towel will glide easily. But as soon as the cleaner is nearly gone it will get very grabby. I don't experience this with my wife's car at all though. In fact I've never come across it before.

If i purchase the ceriglass can i use my lake country foam pads? Or is a special glass pad really needed to make a difference? Do i want the most firm foam pad possible since the glass is so hard?

Buy the rayon pad.

You can start with a very stiff yellow or gray foam pad and Ceriglass but just know that it's going to simply accomplish a strong cleaning vs a polishing. That's likely all you need if it's a new car. However, you can't really go wrong trying out the rayon pad. Just make sure it's their brand pad.

If there is actually bonded contaminants I would go ahead and get the rayon pads. Does a flat towel like a shop towel grab also??

Can you feel these contaminants with your fingers, or have you done a Baggie test?? If you're going solely by what the microfiber towel is doing it would be a good idea to verify there are contaminants before ordering products you might not need. The staining could be another type of issue. Can you possibly get a picture of the stains.

As I mentioned I have dry clean glass grab microfiber towels regularly when the glass is clean and if using a longer nap towel it will pull fibers out. As far as the noise you're hearing when the towel goes across the glass I can't say if I get that or not. I'm literally half deaf.

It just takes a second to do a Baggie test and it may save you some money.
