How long after detailing your car should you wait to put a car cover on? Should I give the wax time to cure?

Shouldn't require any specific waiting time... Main thing is to make sure the car cover is clean as can be just like your vehicle.

I polished & waxed a boat yesterday, and the cover went back on it within an hour of being done with it.. But the best thing was that the owner and I thoroughly cleaned it by spraying APC + D114 and rinsing it with a strong jet of water then allowed it to hang dry in the sun. Huge cover going on a 28' boat and it was filthy. Looked brand new once it dried.

You should wait forever to put the car cover on because car covers are terrible. That is my opinion.

After recently doing a paint correction on a car that the owner covers daily, I would agree with the post above and not use one.

Maybe it parks for extended periods of time.. Not all vehicles are daily drivers or get parked in clean garages at night.

That's right, its not a daily driver. We both have other cars that we run daily. I live on a farm. The charger stays in the garage but the garage does not have doors and with all the dust around here it is impossible to keep a car clean. We only use the charger for special occasions. When I do want to use it I want it clean. If I use it and bring it home dirty the cover does not go back on until I get time to wash it again. I figure since it's garaged it's out of the wind so buffeting by the wind shouldn't be an issue. Just trying to keep the dust and bird droppings off it.

I agree. I think if I *had* to cover something, I would opt for some really soft cotton sheets carefully draped over a perfectly cleaned car instead. I feel like any tight fitting cover with those hard sewn edges is going to marr the paint to some degree when installing or removing. Even the sheets might cause some issues unless you wash them frequently.

By the way, I would NEVER cover a car outdoors. You're better off letting dirt accumulate. Even if you tie it down in every place possible, the paint will still be damaged if you have any windy days.

The key to using a car cover are,

1: Get a quality brand car cover.

2: have a clean place to store it when not in use so IT doesn't get dirty.

3: Dial in your routine for putting it on and taking it off without scratching the paint on your car.

:)

I can respect that. It sounds like you have the best possible way of covering the car since you *must* cover it. I did work on a buddy's race car, and it lives inside a working auto shop so he keeps it covered too, just because keeping it clean would be next to impossible if he didn't. I have a neighbor who drives his Viper and then comes home and puts a cover on it outside and a little piece of me dies inside each time. So sometimes it's a necessary evil. Back when I had my Trans Am weekend toy I used to leave it in the garage all winter long uncovered. I let the dirt and dust build up on it all winter and gave it a good clean in the Spring. To each his own I guess.

If that garage you stored your Trans Am in had owls, or any other birds, that got inside and left waste on your car..or if there was a hole that cats could get in and they walked all over your car with their sharp little claws, I bet you would have used a cover.

Or, you know...got rid of the birds and cats. Maybe use a gorilla for that?
