So I need some car help. Before my kids I had a Miata. In 2005 I sold it, got the SUV and had two kids.
In 2011 my wife took over the SUV, I took over her Elantra.
In 2013 (without permission) I sold the Elantra and got a Focus ST. My wife hates the car, hates riding in it, and has only driven it half dozen times.
Last summer I started a new job that has a longer commute so I added an old Prius for daily driving. At the same time I had a head gasket failure on the Focus and got a complete new long block under warranty.
Now while I kind of enjoy driving the Focus, I don't ever go to grab those keys, just the Prius. I am thinking sell the Focus, buy a nice NA Miata, and have some money for a down payment on a new car for my wife, she can then give the SUV to my oldest daughter who starts to drive this fall.
She will have a car we can all ride in (either her SUV, or a new one) I will in the Prius, and have a fun car in the garage in the Miata. The Miata would be a car we could both drive but would be for 2 only and I still have two kids at home.

So what what would you do? Just drive the Focus some and see if the fun comes back, or cut losses and sell it?

Sell the car! Buy a Miata! I had one and that thing was a BLAST! It was my 2nd Favorite car. I have bought quite a few cars in my lifetime and the Miata ALWAYS put a smile on my face. BTW, my favorite car is the one in my Avatar. 2013 Mustang GT 6-Speed Manual w/Track Pack. I did a few modifications but nothing crazy. It's paid off and I still refuse to part ways with it. The ONLY reason why I got rid of the Miata, my friends wife backed into the car and did serious damage. Your Wife will enjoy the ride too! You won't DIE from a beating from your wife either....LOL

IMO the Prius is a Tin Can and extremely BORING. But that's me. That Miata changes things and it also gets great gas mileage. Maybe about 25 - 30 MPG. Not as good as the Prius, but you won't fall asleep at the wheel driving the Miata like you would the Prius....LOL!

Give the ride your wife wants and you will have a HAPPY WIFE!

Happy Wife, Happy Life!

My wife was so pissed the day she came home from work and the Focus was in the garage. You would think I would have learned, but I'm not the smartest guy on this forum. The house we are living in, she saw for the first time the day we closed. Housing moved very fast, I was in Denver for work going back to Wyoming where we lived. I stopped at this house on he way home, liked it, and did a FaceTime with her. She said ya it's nice, so I made an offer. Before I got back to Wyoming it was accepted.

Though I like the ST, if you aren’t driving it I’d say cut your losses and trade it in.

Well...you know the saying...."Miata, the answer to everything". I remember driving a Miata when it first came out, many moons ago and it was awesome! If you can swing a toy like a Miata who cares what the DD is, even a Prius. One things for sure, the Prius will go forever and refurbished batteries aren't too expensive nowadays, when the time comes.

Which model Miata would you get, the new ND or what?

What are you looking for in the Focus replacement? Performance? Fun handling? Do you want to be able to put more than two people in it? Because I would suggest maybe a Mazdaspeed 3 if you want more than just the two seats in the Miata. Mazda`s handling has always been top notch for its category. My other suggestion is maybe instead of a Miata, get a RX8. Those can fit four people with the suicide doors and they`re fun cars. As long as you know how to drive a rotary it shouldn`t be an issue. It handles great and has some more guts than the Miata.

I miss my old Miata. I have missed it everyday it has been gone for 13 years. I would only be interested in cars with less than 50k miles, and only a few colors. This would still be a third car, but I would enjoy it and have fun more than the st.

I think if you miss your Miata, the emotional connection is not something that options and other factors will change so you might as well go for the Miata. Maybe take a look at some of the trade in models for the convertibles since I'm pretty sure a lot of people traded in their cloth convertibles for the Hard Top Miatas when that came out.

I would get an NA, 90-97.
I used to like the NA the most but then the ND dropped and it hit me like a sledge hammer...the the RF and I couldn't get up, completely knocked me out

That said, the NA is a fine choice, R model is a must...if possible. Which color?

I know my car is gone, it was last registered in 2009. Yes there is emotional attachment for both of us. We were married outside, my wife's dad drove her from the house she changed at to the place of the ceremony.

sell both the focus and prius and buy the miata and new elantra for the wife...

If the fun is gone, it's probably not coming back. Had a 2016 WRX for about 18 months, one of the funnest cars I've ever owned...for about 16 months. Just wasn't worth the hassles anymore; tight, rough ride, goofy Subaru stock tune, rev hang, mushy shifter...just got old after a while. Great idea, no regrets, glad I did it, had fun but it's done now.

My wife hated that car with a passion. Refused to drive it, hated riding in it, rode 150 miles in the back seat when we traded it in.

Toy cars like those/these are just that...toys. After a while you might be ready another...sounds like you're there.

I'd like a Miata too...just seems like fun.
