Hey guys,

Just wanted to say thank you for all the great advice. I am not a proffesional just trying to take care of my care on the weekends. I have just started buying the products and tools thanks to all the great reviews and ideas.

I just washed and waxed the car and cleaned up the inside. Everything was looking good except the chrome exhaust tips, which I welcome cleaning suggestions. The part that I need help is some sort of dirt or carbon build up above exhaust on the white paint. I didn't have any harsh cleaners just wash Mitt soap and some waxes. I will clay my car when it cools down and do a paint sealant but wanted to try and remove build up first.

Car is a Genesis 5.0

thanks!

I use a cleaner wax or all in one type product. Optimum Poly-Seal works well.

You could also try a wetter application of your wax just in that area. The solvents in it may help remove it, or you could try a light polish.

Clay may also remove it, but I think an AIO works better.

I would use Meguiar's ultimate compound followed up with Megs ultimate polish. You can use MF or cotton applicators by hand. That combo will more than likely get rid of the carbon build up on your paint. I would use a sealant to seal the bumper cover. Finish Kare 1000p has a high temp rating which would be perfect for the exhaust area and it is equally awesome on the rest of the car.

Try least agressive first before reaching for a compound. Maybe try a paint cleaner like my personal favorite Poorboys Pro Polish using a microfiber towel or something. Otherwise just try a light polish and it should clean right up.

Thanks for all the feedback! Should have asked before I saw this on my car and purchased a big order!

I would look into a metal polish. I use Polish Angel Polish and it works wonders. I know that Meguire's or Mother's sells something similar. I had black soot and carbon build up on my exhaust tips for my Mustang GT and it cleaned them really nice. I would look into a polish for metal.

I'd use wd-40 first.. simply as it often lifts the same muck off the exhaust tips very easily..

IF it remains then I'd go down the polish road.. no point taking off paint if you don't need too..

Then I'd use a little APC and get some decent sealent on the paint.. somehting like collinite.. 2 coats..

Personally, I'd stay away from WD40 and stronger dilutions of APC on white painted plastic pieces. If you do, spray the bottom and work up.

It may be fine, but white painted plastic can bite you in the arse if you're not careful and go too aggressive.

A wax, cleaner wax/AIO, polish, or clay will not etech or have adverse reactions.

What polish would you recommend for the carbon build up on the paint and/or some lite scratches? I will not be applying with a machine just by hand for now.

Done by hand with Meguiar's D300 on a MF towel. Just rubbed like heck ;) It was later machine polished when I was working on the rest of the vehicle.

In trying to use the "least aggressive method" first to solve the problem, I would suggest trying something like Poorboy's Bug Squash on the painted bumper above your exhaust tips where the carbon is building up. Bug Squash is effective at removing road grime, tar, etc. in addition to bug remains safely off of paint. Before polishing or compounding I would give that a try first, followed by something like Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion (as others have suggested) if the Bug Squash doesn't do the trick. Follow up and let us know what you do/did that works!

Poorboy’s Bug Squash: Removes bug remains, even Love Bugs, from car windshields and front bumpers. bug remover, pooboys bug remover
