anyone use this or know of its abilities and accuracy? Its the Pro Motorcar 2438 ProGauge II Magnetic Paint Thickness Gauge for $54.

:buffing:It might give you a General Idea but their is a reason that the best quality ones are digital Scientific quality guages that can be calibrated. In other words you get what you pay for !

But maybe that is okay, to get a general idea instead of nothing. Problem is, I cannot ever justify buying a tester for $500-$700 so I was hoping to find a diamond in the rough

Harbor Freight did have some centech PTG's on clearance for $10 IIRC a while back so look around on ebay for them.

I have been looking for something on the cheaper side also. I found a digital one for around $175, but it says: "
Measures the thickness of a wide range of non-magnetic surfaces ON magnetic materials [e.g. iron, nickel etc]: "

Do some gauges read the thickness on plastic bumpers or fiberglass panels? couple of my cars have plastic bumper covers

I enjoyed mine right up till the day my son decided to grab it and see how far he could pull it out. lol Yeah, it didn't survive. It did do a great job though. Maybe not ultra accurate, but it does the job when you want to see what the paint thickness difference is around the car. It will only work on metal surfaces, so if you want to measure the bumpers then you have to use one of the spendy electronic ones.

Here is an example of what it shows on a van with pretty serious paint failure. I just wanted to see if it would really show me a difference in thickness. These pictures were taken just before the gauge popped off the surface, which is how it works.

Sadly the only ones I've found that read on non-metallic substrates are in the $1k and up price range. I really can't justify that kind of cost, even though I do work on Corvettes fairly often.

I picked up one of the CenTech ones from Harbor Freight, and it seems to do quite well. The calibration seems pretty consistent with it.

Super Bump!

What is the one that OCD Details has?

I want the 1K one but my bank account wont let me lol

The manual non digital one is what i am looking for. And what is it called?
Any help?
