how are clay bars rated? in grams? somewhere i saw a 200 grm clay bar what does that mean?

:iagree:

Yep, it's their weight since most of the world uses metric. I'm assuming they're measured in grams since they're a Japanese invention and they use grams not ounces.

The more grams the bar, the bigger it is (more clay you get).

Most clays are sold at 200 grams which equals to 7.05 ozs.

How many cars can you do with 200gm? Is there a type of different aggressiveness?

Clay is sold by weight, some is sold in ounces, some in grams. As sort-of noted above, 1 oz = 28.35 grams

Wow, that depends on how contaminated the cars are, how dirty you allow the clay to get, and whether you drop it on the ground (and throw it out) or not. Most of us break a bar into smaller pieces and use them so instead of having one not-new big bar you have, say, 3/4 new and 1/4 dirty. A lot of people then use the demoted dirty clay for windows or wheels before tossing it.

Different grades? Although due to patent restrictions all clay sold in the US is made by one company or under license to that company, there are many, many formulations. Suffice it to say that they range from very aggressive to very mild.

For about 1.5 years I had been using the same clay bar on my two personal cars because they were pretty clean and the clay bar never got overly contaminated. However I did a client's car this past weekend and opened a brand new clay bar. By the end of claying it I had to throw the entire thing away because of how filthy it got. I did keep it long enough to show the client what came off though!

They have a great conversion feature as well.

I find that more times than not, the 100 gram bars are sold with a handy little plastic case and the 200 gram bars simply come wrapped in plastic. From time to time I go for the 100 gram with the case and normally buy the refill 200 gram bar until my case gets broken. It all seems to serve the same purpose though some are more aggressive than others.

I have a 200 gram bar of red for over a year now that I only use if I am going to use a compound after it's use. So long as it doesn't hit the ground and pick up stones I will continue to use it.

I frequently toss my fine clay in exchange for a new bar for maintenance of the cars that I just wash, clay and wax for customers. IMO it's just not worth creating marring that I will have to polish out because I tried to save $20 by hanging on to a clay bar for too long.

Great point that probably gets overlooked often. In retrospect, clay is cheap, especially compared to the price we get paid for a quality detail. There is no reason to try and over-extend the life of a clay bar.

Here's a tip on making your clay bar last a little longer. Get a soft tooth brush and some light soap. After claying and before folding lightly scrub the debris off the clay before refolding. Why fold all that rubbish into the clay. Your clay will now last 3-4 times longer.:xyxthumbs:
