Clay before ultimate compound?

My in laws just gave me a 1999 red camaro with only 53,000 mi always garage stored never driven in winter. I plan to do a complete detail with Meguiars products. Would you still clay a vehicle or will the ultimate compound do the cleaning a clay bar would anyway?

Clay it, and decontaminate with a product like Iron-X too.

Are you using a Dual Action Polisher to do the project??

Yes, you will want to clay and perhaps decontaminate the paint with something like Car Pro Iron X before compounding. Main reason is you want to compound and polish paint that's free of any contaminants for obvious reasons.

I think it's worth asking however if the car even needs to be hit with a compound vs just a polish? Any pics of the paint as it is today?

+1 Agree here too! Regardless what you do in your detail claying or Nanoskin is a must do.

You've got some seriously great in-laws. That's awesome.

First, decide how you want to continue treating the car. Whether it's to be a daily driver, driven on occasion and garage kept, or a garage queen and rarely driven.

Yes the compound will take off what the claybar will, but you dont want that junk in your pads.

That is the point of claying, to remove all the dirt junk and contamination so you can have a easier and less stressfull buffing experience.

Why get your pads dirty and clogged with dirt that will scratch your paint , when you are trying to remove that.

Always clay.

Ok I will clay it before I start. Yes I am going to use a da, I just ordered a Meguiars MT300 the other day. The paint isn't bad at all really, I possibly could just get by with the polish, but the ultimate compound seems pretty foolproof from the little I have messed with it. I will probably do a test section with each and go from there.

17 years of contamination? Yeah I would do a full decon, if for no other reason you will know when one was done and you wont need it again for awhile.

Eschewing a claying then watching pigtails appear would certainly not please me.

Gotta' clay bar..... I would recommend an aggressive clay bar.
