I have Wolfgang uber and fine grade polish. I'm wondering if using either product with a flex will sufficiently clean the windshield in preparation for a glass sealant like gtechniq g1?

Thanks

Over 200 views but no comments? Is this a bad idea? Just looking for a simple yes or no really. Thanks

I'm not sure if its a bad idea, but ive done this on several friends/family daily drivers. I used Megs Ultimate Polish on a Blue CCS pad. Worked well, but honestly, it didnt seem all that much better than using Stoner, followed by Eagle 20/20 (on the outside only)

I personally would only use products designed for glass to polish glass. Not sure the abrasive quality of paint polish is the same as those with glass. DP makes a nice product, Glass Restorer. CarPro offers one also ...

OK thanks, just needed some confirmation from others that it wont kill the glass. I'll test it out on the rear window and follow up with my results.

I wouldn't use paint polish. Like stated above you may have different abrasives in the paint polish and you may have different polish lubricating oils left over on the glass. Not worth it in my opinion. Wipe glass clean, clay or Nanoskin then use a dedicated glass polish.

I've used Pinnacle Water Spot remover for glass with alot of success, but I've also used Poorboys Pro Polish 2 and have never had any problems and it really gets out water spots. It may not be a good idea, but I've used it alot.

Poorboys Pro Polish has worked for me on the windshield with very good results.

I would think Glass Polish would be more abrasive than a polish.

I just put Pinnacle black label glass coating on the windshield of my impala today. I used Detailers Pride Prep polish. Went on easy, came off easy. Then applied the coating and boom. Windshield turned out perfect. The other day i also used Autoglym All in one to clean a friends windshield as i didn't have my polish yet. Worked equally as good and the water still beads to her standards. I guess it depends on how picky you want to be. Also like to mention i tried the wipers and they didn't smear

IMO:
•Big difference between "cleaning" glass with an automotive paint polish; and "polishing" glass with a glass polish!

•I've "cleaned" many an auto-glass surface with paint polishes:
-Meguiar's M04...although one of the more "coarse-abrasives" polishes...is one of my most favorite.

•Use of the Wolfgang products you have listed will definitely
"clean" your vehicle's glass surfaces.

-Always go with the least aggressive first.
-Heat...Watch out for getting auto-glass too hot: Heat will definitely "kill your glass"!!
(That's one of the more very-real dangers/risks whenever actually using a glass polish)

I've used paint polish on glass..including Meg's 105 with no problem. The DP and Pinnacle Black Label cleansing lotions are designed for paint and glass

Thanks all, some great advice here. To clarify, my intent is just to clean the glass in preparation for a sealant, not to actually "polish" out any imperfections. Apologies for any confusion.

Just wanted to follow up on this. Decided to go with doing a serious glass polish with carpro's ceriglass. Came out great! Followed up with carpro eraser and then applied the gtechniq G1 to the windshield (3 coats), side windows and rear. Let stand for 15-20min and used the G2 remover with a terry cloth applicator. G1 residue came off surprisingly well, contrary to some of the horror stories I've seen elsewhere. A few spots were a little stubborn and got a spritz of Eraser but on the whole everything went smoothly.

Unfortunately it has not rained yet while driving, but it just rained today and when I walked by the car the water was beading right off the windshield. Very pleased with the ceriglass and G1!!!

When you say it "came out great"...are you saying that the Ceriglass/rayon effectively cleaned the glass as prep for G1, or that it also removes defects in the glass?

I've tried M105 on glass, didn't do much visually, but who knows, perhaps it cleaned some stuff up I couldn't see. I've also used CarPro CeriGlass on side window glass and windshield. I have a scratch on my passenger side window, hit it with CeriGlass and an LC glass polishing pad, and it did not remove the scratch, but did fog up the area around the scratch. I decided to leave well enough alone. Windshield glass is harder than side glass, so I lightly tried it on my windshield. If anything, all it did was slightly scuff up my windshield, but I figured at least it totally cleaned the windshield and prepped the surface for G1. Maybe, maybe not. At 60 mph, the G1 sloughs water OK, but the beads are small, and it's constantly borderline whether I should use my wipers. The first few weeks after using Rain-X, there is absolutely no need to use the wipers at 60 mph. Large beads which slough off easily, clear visibility. The reason I tried G1 was to find something like Rain-X, but which was longer lasting. That goal was not met. So, in summary, count me as a non-fan of CeriGlass, LC glass pads, and G1.

Both. I can definitively say the ceriglass took out a good portion of the wiper scratches on the windshield. I spent about 1.5 hrs working on it, and I would say it got out about 75-80% of what I was looking at. I've heard of others working the windshield for longer, so perhaps that number could have gone up, but I was happy with where I got it.

Regarding the prep for G1, all I can say is that my application and removal was a relatively simple affair, which compared to some of the horror stories I've seen on the forums I would like to attribute to proper prep of the surface. Obviously, the real test will be its durability and whether there are any problems with wiper judder or streaking. As of yet, I have not seen or experienced either.

Sorry to hear about your prior test Chet. When I was researching G1 I came across a few threads that shared your experience, then I came across this thread: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...removal-glass-scratches-carpro-griots-da.html

Swanicyouth did an excellent walkthrough with his experience with Ceriglass and his advice is what I generally followed when doing my own correction. In his review he mentions his previous use of the LC glass pads with ceriglass and was unhappy with the hazing, much like what you experienced. Based on swanicyouth's results, I went with the Carpro ryon pads and with the ceriglass had no issues; no hazing, ticks or other aberrations.

I want to emphasize that the key to using the ceriglass is keeping the product wet. I always liberally sprayed the windshield with water then did about 2 passes with the ceriglass, followed by a spritz with water then a pass, then water and so on for a total of 6 passes. This process gets very messy, so make sure you cover everything up.

Whether or not the G1 will work as I hope, I'll just have to wait until I drive in the rain, but as I mentioned earlier, the beading I saw on the windshield was what I was expecting.

It won't remove scratches, but I cleaned my glass with a PC, LC Flat Yellow Heavy Cutting Pad, and Menzerna SIP. Have never polished my glass before. I also clayed becore this. After polishing I used DG 105/601. Huge difference and also seemed to allow the DG 105/601 adhere better when looking at its hydrophobic properties.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I too clayed before polishing. Also made a couple passes with Eraser after claying too.

The problem was not the Ceriglass it was the LC pads. Been there done that. Got the Car Pro rayon glass polishing pads and the combination worked great on all windows. Took out all the scratches left by the LC pad
